Fish is not a vegetarian 'food' (they're not food at all IMO, they're sealife). Someone who eats fish should not call themselves vegetarian.

there are lots of threads about this.

people who say they are vegetarians and who still eat fish, well, for a start, they aren't vegetarians (as fish are not vegetables, they are living breathing creatures with eyes and brains and all kindsa other non-plant bits), so these people, either they're misinformed (they don't know that fish aren't plants), or they're purposely misrepresenting themselves (they know, but don't care and still want to call themselves something they aren't).

secondly, they make things a pain in the arse for actual vegetarians, because if they're wandering round eating fish and saying they're a vegetarian, it leads many people to believe that we vegetarians do eat fish.

fish eating 'vegetarians' (they're actually pescatarians) are the reason that i get offered fish and told i can/should eat it, cos its vegetarian (erm, yeah... no, i can't, i won't, and it isn't), and that vegetarian menus in restaurants and takeaway places, and even products labelled 'suitable for vegetarians' in supermarkets and grocery stores contain random fish items, fish stock, worcestershire sauce, anchovies, etc etc etc.

so when i think of people who say they're vegetarian and eat fish, i go 'arrggghhhh!!!' and bang my head against a teeny tiny brick wall in my head.

whether its ok to eat fish or not, thats a personal choice, you can eat what you want, whether i care or not- personally i think its gross to eat fishes, but you do whatever you want, what counts is what YOU think, ya know? but either way, i don't think its ok to eat it and say you're a vegetarian, cos you're erm... well... not, lol.

Yep, what they said. ^^^

Fish isn't a vegetable. It has blood and bones cause it's an animal which would make it not vegetarian because vegetarians don't eat animals.

This happened all the time with my ex-in-laws because the one calls herself vegetarian yet eats aquatic animals pretty much every day. She even used to push anchovy-laden Chex mix on me.

hoodedclawjen said it beautifully. You can eat whatever you want to eat - but vegetarians don't eat fish.

Eating fish while calling yourself a vegetarian is, well, not vegetarian. And it's also annoying to real vegetarians, and confusing to omnivores.

Come on now, are you actually suggesting that if I were to look at a chart that separated organisms into the plant kingdom and the animal kingdom that fish would be in the animal kingdom??? That's ridiculous!!!

I posted this in another thread but it fits in nicely here:

Quote:

It has been shown that fish are more intelligent than hamsters so when we get this kind of talk I imagine hamsters instead of fish. Do we put a whole bunch of hamsters in a big cage and raise them that way and then slaughter them? Do we set out cages to catch a bunch of wild ones and then drown them en masse? Do we allow people to trick them one at a time with bait on a hook so that people can have a lovely afternoon communing with nature?

Any option stinks except to leave them alone.

hoodedclawjen said it all so perfectly.

Eat fish if you want to, that's not my place to tell people what they should eat (just like it isn't their place to tell me what I should eat), but please, anyone who eats fish is not a vegetarian, pescetarian if they must have a name.

Plants have chlorophyll, make their own food, etc. Fish don't have any of those, AND they have blood, bones, eyes, nerve system, etc. Fish aren't vegetables for crying out loud!

Okay... enough ranting for the day

On a related note: According to happycow.net:

Quote:

To the French people, "végétarien" does not necessarily exclude fish or chicken, so be clear about what you want or don't want.

I'm sure there are good things to be said about the French, but the above is not one of them.

Not to start a debate here outside of the Heap but your statement has been made and I want to suggest that there is a different way of looking at it:

According to the American Dietetic Association people don't need to eat fish or any other kind of meat. The reason that some people "tell" (I think suggesting is better) others what they should eat is that they feel to cause an animal to suffer needlessly is contrary to human dignity. And to stand by while it happens may also be contrary to human dignity.

So just as the SPCA steps into the personal lives of others to tell them not to cause needless suffering to animals, in democratic societies it may also be "our" place to "tell" others what they should or shouldn't eat.

I think it's confusing to people cooking for vegetarians (whether in restaurants or home cooks) that some people call themselves vegetarians but eat seafood.

I think it's not OK for me to eat fish, so I don't eat fish. I think it's fine for other people to eat fish if they want to.

No. Fish are not objects for human use.

I have had two friends recently tell people they are vegan but they both eat fish. Seriously. So people are no longer just mis-using the word vegetarian but now vegan as well.

I think fish are animals, so I think eating fish is not cool, and that people who eat fish are not vegetarians. But those are just my opinions.

I got a Vegetarian cookbook for Christmas from my brother -- 1000 Vegetarian Recipes or some such... and one of the recipes (at least, this is the only one I've come across) calls for Vegetable OR FISH BROTH. I was like "WTF?!? This is a VEG*N COOKBOOK?!?"

I'd like to write to the publisher, but the book is 10 yrs old so I doubt they'd care anyway. I have another vegetarian cookbook that calls for chicken broth in recipes.

[Neither fish nor poultry are vegetarian]
