I saw this comment on the Huffingon post. I'm worried because I havn't met any other vegetarians in real life, but from what I've seen from pictures is that most look their age.

"If you want anecdotal evidence, I've only known one vegetarian who didn't suffer from poor health and premature aging. The reason why I began researchin*g this topic 35 years ago is because it was so common to meet a vegetarian and think, "they look pretty good for 45", only to find out that person was 28.

As for my own family, we all eat lots of meat, eggs, cheese and butter as well a fair amount of vegetables*. We also tend to be a pretty healthy bunch. The average lifespan for my maternal and paternal clans is probably somewhere around 89, with quite a few living well into their 90s. (Even the smokers usually live to see their 80th birthdays.*) We usually don't need a lot of medical interventi*on as we age either. There is no heart disease. Can't remember one relative who had to have a hip replacemen*t. (Strong bones run in my family.) The only ones who had cancer were the smokers.

More and more evidence is pointing to refined carbs and a lack of exercise as larger factors in poor health than saturated fats. In fact, saturated fats have all but been vindicated*. You may also find my first link interestin*g, assuming you haven't read it yet. It involves a study of Swedish men that found daily consumptio*n of vegetables were only associated with a lower risk of heart disease when large amounts of full-fat dairy foods were also included in the diet."

What do you think and what have you seen in real life?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/riddhi....html?ir=Green

I'd say it depends on genes and diet mostly. Some vegetarians eat a lot of grains and processed foods; some eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. You can't really generalize "vegetarians" to mean any specific diet other than a lack of meat and certain other animal products.

The raw vegans I have seen look great, the ones who eat enough calories, I mean.

People who tan or don't wear sunscreen, drink a lot of alcohol, and smoke usually don't age well. Hydration is key.

It's just another "meat is magic" post full of silly anecdotes with no actual science to back them up. There is no truth to it and you have no reason to be worried.

Just eat well and stay in shape and odds are pretty good you'll age well.

Yeah...I don't think this is a very reliable article. Although I do have a lot of gray hair...

I don't even think people are aware how horrible fruits and vegetables are on your body All those vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants... You'll look like a prune by the time you're 30

I've met up with a fair number of vegetarians/vegans, and I'd say close to all of them look younger than they really are. I don't know exactly what determines that, but comparing the vegans I know to the omnivores... You don't have anything to worry about

Atleast you've still got hair I'm 23 and I'm already bald

It's just another thing I'm not going to worry about.

I've got enough to worry on. Stuff like this doesn't make the list.

I'd like to add that even if the claim were true, I'd still be a vegan. Not contributing to a system of violence and oppression means more to me than not having a few wrinkles.

Eh, I doubt it. I don't see how it could be. I think it's just another smear tactic.

Well, fats are important in terms of keeping the skin plumped and supple, so maybe they're talking about "fast food vegetarians" who don't eat enough good fats? Either way it still doesn't make much sense. Oh, and my boyfriend has been veg*n most of his life and he has been mistaken for a 19 year old. He's 29.

Seeing that they say that they are going by "anecdotal evidence", I would say that it is a pretty unscientific method by which to make such a claim.

Dudegirl/dudeboy, that's in the comment section. It's a comment, on the Internet, by some random person. And on HuffingtonPost of all places, which isn't exactly the meeting place of great minds. Why do you pay so much attention to it? Comments like that have roughly the same substance and credibility as transcriptions of Ryan Reynolds talking in his sleep.

I could post on an Internet comment section:

Quote:

Actually, there is a species of small primates living in the nose of Sevenseas. Earlier this was just a hypothesis, but in recent years a small night-vision camera was installed in Sevenseas's nose, and that camera captured the movements of at least 8 primates, which confirmed what primate biologists had been saying for years. More and more evidence is pointing that these primates also have a small cd player and are listening to the Bee Gees on tiny discs.

That wouldn't mean that anyone would have any reason to believe it's true...

I read recently that low B12 levels can cause hair to grey prematurely, not that I'm saying it's the case for you as genetics plays a huge part but it may happen for some veg*ns who don't pay attention to their B12 levels.

I wish that was true for me! I'm 27 and I *still* get asked for ID to prove my age if I'm trying to get into a movie rated 18 or over! I seem to be permanently stuck in the mid-teens look.

I've seen veg*n guys in their mid 30's who still look like they could be in grade 12.
But, I'm only 14 and people keep assuming I'm 17 or 18 when they first see me.
