I found out an interesting fact, and I thought I'd turn it into a trivia game here.

Here's the rules: I ask the first question. The first person to post the correct answer gets to ask the next question. Continue until we all get bored with it.

All of the questions have to have something to do with vegetarianism. Let's try to keep it positive. Ask about celebrity vegetarians, vegetarian history, and stuff like that, instead of doing sad facts about AR abuses, number of animals killed, or anything like that.

So here's the first question:

1. On what day of the year do many (most?) Chinese people choose not to eat meat?

So does the lack of responses mean that people don't like the idea of a trivia game, or just that nobody knows the answer to the first question? I actually thought it was an easy one, given all the press right now about the only Chinese holiday that most Americans have ever heard of *cough*today*cough*.

I was just sort of surprised by the total lack of response after more than half a day since the original post. This place is usually busier than that.

And yes, it is the Chinese New Year. Technically, the New Year celebration lasts 2 weeks, but on the first day of the new year, it's considered bad luck by many Chinese people, especially Budhists, to eat meat. Apparently, the traditional dinner on that day is Buddha's Delight.

So if there's any interest in keeping the trivia game going, you get to ask the next question.

I love trivia! Sorry I didn't notice the thread before. If animallover7249 isn't interested, can I ask the next question?

Edited because I realized Fromper bestowed the question asking rights on the person who correctly answered the first question.

Is it the Festival of Lights? Or am I getting cultures confused?

The Festival of Lights is a nickname for the Jewish holiday of Chanukah (Hanukah). There are a lot of fireworks with the Chinese New Year, though. That's a generic enough term that it wouldn't surprise me if some other culture also had a holiday that used it, too.

As for the next question, the rules are that whoever answers a question first gets to ask the next one. I just figure that if we get too many people asking questions, this thread could become very confusing very quickly. I've seen other online places have quiz/trivia games that work this way, and it usually works well.

Ok, so if animallover7249 doesn't come back soon and ask a question, someone else should ask one to keep the game going. Sarah+13, you seemed like you had a question to ask, if you want to get the game going again.

You can use this question if you like:

What famous scientist left the study of medicine because he found vivisection too "barbaric, horrible, and of all, superfluous."

Ok, you got me curious, so I just spent over half an hour googling dozens of sites trying to find the answer. Near as I can figure, there is no known answer to this question. I found several sites that talk about specific references as to why we know that Leonardo was a vegetarian. But given that even the fact that he was one is based on heresay, I can't imagine how you would know at what age he became one. Even the most famous quote attributed to him regarding being vegetarian came from a work of fiction about his life, so it wasn't actually a real quote from him.

I did find a couple of sites that mentioned him being a "life long" vegetarian, which is worded vaguely enough that it might imply that he was one from birth. Is that the answer you were looking for? I also haven't read The Da Vinci Code, but that's fictional too, so I hope your answer doesn't come from there.

Maybe I have it wrong. My reference is an art history book which is still packed from the move. (It claimed 3 years old). Now you have me curious as to the source that book got it from. It would have to have a bibliography. I'm really curious about this claim too now because I can't find it anywhere else now.

Until I look it up* I'll ask another question. What year was the word vegan coined?

* Give me a week or so! I've just moved in.

I'll feel like such a dork if I've asked a question for a dodgy reference book!

It's all good, Kiz. Even if the book turns out to be wrong (and it might not), I still learned some stuff about an historic vegetarian while researching it. Did you know Leonardo was such a dedicated animal rights activist that he sometimes bought caged birds at market just to release them into the wild? And that the Catholic Church at the time considered vegetarianism to be the Devil's diet? And that Leonardo was suspected of being gay? Interesting stuff.

And to answer your question: 1944. That one was easy.

For a weirder question: What fictional vegetarian character has been portrayed by both Cheryl Ladd and Tara Reid?

Here's a hint: Using the internet to seek out answers you don't know isn't against the rules.
