Hi, I am very new to vegetarianism. I just started transitioning last week to this new lifestyle after watching a horrific video about animal cruelty in slaughterhouses. I am from Canada and was wondering if anybody knows if there are any meatless products (veggie burgers, chicken) that are sold in Canada? What products would you recommend? Or do you have any recipes for homemade veggie burgers/meatless chicken? Thanks so much!

We don't have Morningstar or Boca (I think) but a big yes to Yves!

I think Yves is a great company, and almost all of their products are vegan too. I cannot recommend the Ground Round enough, it tastes exactly like ground beef, seriously. I feel comfortable saying it tastes exactly the same because I've fed it to plenty of meat eaters who could not tell the difference and were convinced I must be feeding them meat. I also like their spicy veggie dogs and bologna although I don't get them as much. They do have other products that are good but those are my favourites, everyone has different tastes so its a matter of trying it yourself to see what you like. I'm not as big a fan of their veggie burgers for instance, but you might love them.

Gardein is another great one. Their 7 grain crispy tenders are another eerily convincing fake, they taste so much like chicken nuggets I have freaked out some meat eaters with those too. The beefless tips are also great in stews or stir fry.

Sol Cuisine makes really good veggie burgers, their black bean burgers are my favourite.

Also, I am addicted to hickory smoked Tofurky deli slices. My carnivorous cat loves them!

I know they sell Yves soy burgers in Ontario as I convinced my parents to pick some up. They're really good. Throw some condiments on them and you'd never know there wasn't any meat in it
We've got them out here(Alberta), and we've got Tofurky sausages aswell which are amazing
I'd definately suggest the Tofurky, and $5 for 4 sausages isn't a bad buy/

Of course, nobody ever said vegetarians have to eat processed fake meat at every meal either for that matter. I certainly eat my share, but there's tons more to the world of vegetarianism than soy "meat" products. Good old fashioned foods like rice and beans, or vegetable soup, or peanut butter on whole wheat are healthy and completely vegetarian.

I live in the same city as the OP and they don't sell Lick's here. We also don't have Metro or A&Ps.

It's true Yves is the most accessible, but Tofurky products are popping up in more and more locations.

Brittany, I think I already mentioned it already, but Boon Burger is an entirely vegan burger restaurant on Sherbrook and it's fantastic!

Turtle Island Foods Inc(Tofurky) has also picked up better manufacturing practices as they don't use hexane during food production. Yves and Amy's does
They're still no where near as unhealthy as beef burgers, but every little bit counts
I still eat the Yves veggie burgers, but because I don't know exactly what effects hexane could have on my health, I limit it to a packet or two a month. I get the Tofurky sausages almost every week...

Tofurky Sausages...fried up and put on toast with peanut butter and maple syrup....OH EM GEE....meat what now? Denny's got nothing on that!

Honestly, buy a few different products and tests them out. It's the best way to decide what you like.
