Hey all.

My name is TJ. I live in Whitby, Ontario, Canada. It's a short distance from Toronto.

I'm 36 and have been a vegetarian for a third of my life. It's a choice I made because I thought it would be a good way to make people uncomfortable and have them say stupid things to me. I'm pleased to report that it has been a total success!

I originally became a veg*an just to see how many days I could go without meat. I think I was just bored a lot back then. I originally just thought it would be a couple of days or weeks. It's been well over four thousand days now.

After reading Animal Liberation I knew I could never eat meat again. It's primarily a not-wanting-animals-to suffer thing for me.

I've recently started to cut back on carbs by reducing my consumption of rice, bread, pasta and potatoes. As if people who wanted to invite me over for dinner didn't already have enough problems.

My goal in life is to one day read the two "Stupid Things Omnivores Say" threads in their entirety because I have heard them all believe you me.

One of my favourite stupid things was in a restaurant when I ordered a veggieburger and the waiter asked how I wanted it cooked.

On a grill, I said.

No. I mean do you want it rare, medium or well done? was his reply.

What do you even SAY to that?

Anyway, I was vegan for about five or six years but, due to a compromise with the woman who became my wife, I eat the odd bit of cheese and free-range eggs. Anyone who's married knows it's all about compromise. And trust me. It's a LOT less than what I compromised in my first marriage--my happiness and sex life.

I've tried to rationalize the contradiction between not wanting animals to suffer and eating even small amounts of eggs and milk...and I can't. What can I say? I'm deeply flawed.

Anyway, enough about me. Glad to be here.

Cheers!
