I have been looking at some forums and looking for weight loss tips and such. I came across a site that says a vegan/ vegetarian does not get enough nutrients to be healthy over a long period of time and its not a sustainable diet. I think this is crazy because Hindus eat vegan and thrive. Is there ant truth to their statement? \t\t\t\t\t\t

It may be true for some people who eat a bunch of processed garbage, but not for those who eat real food.

Hindus do not eat a vegan diet. Dairy is a big part of Indian food. However, there are plenty of vegans who are perfectly healthy. I've been vegan for 8 yrs (vegetarian for 17), and I am healthy. I'll let you know in another decade how I'm doing, but I'm not expecting a decline in health.

There are lots of resources to help anyone learn how to eat a balanced vegan diet. It requires no more work than planning a balanced nonvegan diet.

The basics:
Eat a variety of legumes, grains, vegetables, and fruit. Include a reliable source of B12.
Examine your diet every now and then to ensure adequate intakes. If necessary, change your diet or add a supplement.

People who are always trying to lose weight are some of the unhealthiest eaters in my experience, so don't listen to them.

What's funny/ironic is that the average person eating the Standard American Diet is probably more nutritionally deprived than the average person eating a vegan diet. You can be unhealthy with either but it's likely your average vegan is more aware of food and nutrition. Many SAD eaters pay attention to nutrition in elementary school health classes but later rely more on an unshakable belief in the mystical properties of animal products - faith-based nutrition if you will.

^^^agree also.

now to be a really healthy veg person, you should rely on a lower fat, whole foods diet, with very little processed foods in it. skip the junk food, and cook yourself!

Yep I agree, these people that says you can't be healthy on a Veg diet is wrong, they don't know anything. Thanks for the info Elaine and I don't go according to the American Standard Diet anymore I rather do Cross between Vegetarian and meditterrian with some Asian diet int between.

Any diet can be deficient in nutrients. I was watching a show yesterday that said that most obese people are malnourished b/c they don't eat enough fruits, veggies, and grains to get the vitamins they need. Since most of the nutrients we nee come from fruits, veggies, and grains, I would say that vegans who pay attention to what they eat have a BETTER chance of getting everything need except b12, which is easily supplemented.

Yep. I know a couple of vegans who are probably two of the unhealthiest eaters I know. Neither of them ever cook or eat anything fresh. Nothing but fake, processed junk food.
