Everything you need to know about B12 (and lots of other nutritionfacts.org!)

http://nutritionfacts.org/?s=b12

For anyone who doesn't know--check the label on your nooch!
I'd always gotten it packed and refrigerated and clearly labeled Red Star vegetarian formula. One day I was at Whole Foods and saw the bin for nooch--the label was unreadable. I asked the employee to check and he brought back a new label. It was Red Star without the B12. I was shocked that the biggest name in nutritional food stores would sell that one! My email was responded with a 'sorry', but no explanation!
Nutritional yeast has to be grown on a certain medium to have B12.

^^^ What Silva said. And sea vegetables, which are/were reputed to have B-12, DO NOT have the vitamin. They have something which gives a false positive result to chemical assay.

The links above were hard for me to read at this screen, but I do take a supplement. I think I read/heard that small amounts taken frequently are absorbed more efficiently than large doses, so I nibble bit of B-12 tablet once or twice a day. They're not expensive; I just like to be efficient. My doctor knows I don't eat animal foods and that I take a supplement, and evidently my routine bloodwork would show abnormalities if I was deficient. But I've also read that deficiency can cause neurological problems to manifest even sooner than anemia.

I eat the kind that is lol.
It's so often recommended here and many people do assume nutritional yeast has B12 by default. I was particularly shocked that not only did Whole Foods stock the non fortified, but had an unreadable label! Braggs nut. yeast is unfortified.

An update posted on nutritionfacts.org---
Doctor's Note
Update: data heroically procured by Vesanto Melina suggests that the nutrition facts label of Red Star brand's "vegetarian support formula" nutritional yeast is misleading and that one may only get 0.9 mcg of vitamin B12 per teaspoon. So to serve as a sole source one would have to consume 2 teaspoons three times a day (4 to 6 hours apart). The video was updated and re-recorded on July 14, 2012 to reflect this fact. Thank you Vesanto!
