If you're a vegan and you wear shoes, chances are at one point or another you had to contact a company about the materials they use in their shoes. Feel free to post any responses you receive from them here! It just may save someone else a phone call or email.

Dear Janelle,

Thank you for your interest in New Balance!

All of the following models are made with synthetic materials. However,

please note that we do use different types of glues depending on what is

available. Some of our glues will contain animal products as many glues

do. Although the shoe may be made of synthetic leather it does not mean it

will be completely vegan. We do not mix real and synthetic leathers on any

shoe.

Glues weren't mentioned in this response from Blackspot though I didn't ask specifically about them. I just asked if the shoes were vegan.

Yes, absolutely. Robin Webb of Vegetarian Shoes in the UK is our production consultant, and all our components are sourced through him. No animal products are used.

Thanks for your interest.

The problem I have is I am a 9E to 9EE, so finding vegan footware in a store is difficult, and ordering online is something I won't even consider because it will likely not fit on the first try. I wish more stores would advertise vegan shoes more so they we would know what to even try on in the first place.

I had to buy new shoes recently & I got the only ones that didn't have leather on them. But I'd like to know if it says 'Synthetic Upper & lining & rubber sole' does that mean it hasn't got any leather on them. I mean- on part of the shoe it looks like leather but my bf is trying to assure me it's not because they'd be more expensive. They'd have to say it was made with leather if it was, yes? What does it sound like to you? All I can tell you is they are pink, black & white joggers with the 'HC' logo with a star on it.

Since it says synthetic uppers, it's probably not leather. I have a pair of shoes that are mainly "cottony," but probably has a 1/2 inch by 3 inch area that might be leather...I still wear them, but they don't say what they're made of at all. Anyway, I know some shoes don't specify and then I don't trust that it's not leather...some leather is "cheap," so price doesn't necessarily prove that it's not leather.

I saw vegan Birkenstock Arizona (classic style) sandals on many vegan websites, but I doubted the "vegan" classification since I suspected the footbed liners were made of suede leather. I wrote to the Birkenstock company, but they do not answer customer questions, so they referred me to one of the main USA suppliers. Here is the original question and the answer:

Quote:
According to the official Birkenstock USA website, the Birko-Flor [synthetic leather] Arizona sandal uses a suede footbed liner. Is the same model available with a non-leather (microfiber, etc) footbed liner?

Thank you.

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for writing. Unfortunately there isn't an Arizona being made with a non-leather liner at this time. We only have the Arizona with the non-leather uppers and the suede liner that you saw on Birkenstock USA's website. We do carry a couple of other styles that have both non-leather uppers and liners, though. They are the Riviera, Fuji, Woodby and Tahiti.

I'm sorry that I don't have better news for you. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Have a great day!

Paula

So the vegan shoe websites may be mistaken in listing the Birkenstiock Arizona in the inventory.

Who knows?

CJB

(SIDE NOTE: The styles listed above are available in women's [narrow] sizes only. No luck for vegan men.)

Please note that if you want to be comfortable in shoes, for more than an hour or 2, you need a breathable upper, one that allows air to get in-out. If you want to walk thru dewy grass, or on rainy days, you will need water resistance too. Most synthetic leather-look uppers are not breathable. They make my feet actually hurt if I wear this kind of material for a while. The NoBull line from Pangea - their phone rep said the uppers are NOT breathable. Most of Vegetarian Shoe's line, IS breathable. As is Ethical Wares, and Vegan Wares.

Note, however, that these breathable synthetic uppers are NOT fire resistant. Leather IS fire resistant. At least, at high temperature, synthetic uppers will melt, and stick like glue to your skin, exacerbating the injuries. Leather will not melt and stick like that. Neither will canvas or hemp treated for fire resistance.

You can get water-resistant breathable polyester felt shoes. I don't think they are fire-resistant either.

"Give me a break. I am not going to worry about one type of shoes that I ought to wear to be in a vegan cult"

?? The purpose of wearing a certain type of shoes is to not need to cause ugly animal slaughter and ugly animal husbandry and animal suffering - in order to have (1) protection for one's feet from weather, and from injury from potentially harmful walking surfaces, and (2) to be wearing shoes that are acceptable within the culture of one's place of employment, and thus be able to get a job or keep one's job and be able to have money needed for survival or even good living. It has nothing to do with belonging to any kind of vegan cult, or even a vegan clique. It does, to some extent, have something to do with belonging to a coporate-culture clique.

Okay...

Just a question why would you bother posting that on a VEGAN forum... Your opinion really doesn't affect anyone, and frankly no one on here cares, we are Vegans, we are not in a "vegan cult". We aren't all going to wear the same shoe, we will wear regular shoes, just ones made without animal product. Hey you probably have a pair of shoes with no animal product yourself, you just didn't get them on purpose.

Don't try and bash people because you don't have the same beliefs.
