I switched to vegan about 5 months ago, after being vegetarian for 3 years. Now I'm noticing that my periods are sooooo much lighter (used to be ridiculously heavy the first 3-4 days) and so much less painful (used to have excruciating cramps that would make me nauseous). Is there a connection, do you think? I wonder if it's from being vegan or from ingesting more soy, or what. Whatever it is, this is fantastic!

I haven't noticed a huge difference, then again my periods have always been fairly tame.

Hey, aren't you a bit young for this?

LOL. Sorry, I suspect my avatar evokes an image much younger than I actually am...perhaps because it is a picture of me at a much younger age! I'm 5 years old in that picture. It was taken about 20 years ago. Ahhh...those were the days...

My period pain is usually directly related to my caffeine consumption. More = bad. Foods don't seem to have an effect.

When I am a raw vegan (I manage for a while, but am vunerable to stress when trying to change habits), I don't even realize I have my period, as far as cramps go and whatnot. It lasts only 2-3 days too (actually it lasts that long when I am plain vegan too). However, when I start to eat a lot of processed foods, like the ones that are REALLY bad for you, man do I feel it. I get ultra moody and my cramps are the worst. Those muscles down there just are killing me and everything is so bloated and distended. Heh. Well, that's it for me and my graphic depiction. I never realized how much I took my "non-cramp and moody" times for granted until just recently I had one of the worst periods I had ever! ugh. heh

Also, many woman have horrible cramps in their teens who then grow out of them in adulthood.

I've never seen a difference.

Mine got a little better when I switched from ovo-lacto to vegan. Then again, I'd only been having them for a year, so they they hadn't really 'settled in.' Any changes could simply have been a coincidence.

I'm 25, and I have noticed a change in my periods since being a teenager, but that occurred about 6 years ago and nothing much has changed since. Frequently I still have had extremely painful, long, heavy periods.

If it's not the veganism, I don't know what it is. Organicorange, I'm just about raw. Most of what I eat is pretty much unprocessed. Maybe that makes the difference. My period was only 3 days this time, too! Craziness. Very lovely craziness. I hope this lasts.

Have you drastically reduced your fat intake? Dr. Neil Barnard in his book "Breaking the Food Seduction" says(if I remember correctly) that women can improve or eliminate PMS mood swings and physical discomforts by reducing their fat intake to 10% of calories consumed throughout the entire cycle.

Mine have gotten better, but not all the time. I still get mind alteringly painful periods, just only about 1-2 times a year instead of 6-9 times a year.

I eat much less fat now. (Probably about 10%)

I also eat more soy. (Which I think has made them regular)

I also eat healthier in general, get more nutrients than then.

I'd say that the change probably has more to do with increasing age rather than diet, but since it came on suddenly and at the same time as your veganism, i could be wrong. Going on the pill also drastically reduces cramps. Watch out for too much soy consumption (same as with everything - everything is good in moderation.)
