It was recently brought to my attention by the only other vegan I know that there is a web site called Vegan Meetup.

vegan.meetup.com.

Around 580 cities participate in this, and the first Saturday of every month, vegans get together at various eating establishments to chat and get to know each other. It's not a singles group, although the potential certainly exists for single attendees to meet someone that they could become romantically involved with. I am considering going to one of these in Chicago out of curiosity. Are any of you familiar with Vegan Meetup? If I do go, I'll report back to let all of you know how things went.

i have repeatedly voted for a venue and intended to go, an dthen it is always cancelled due to lack of interest. that is for the vegetarian meetup so maybe you will have better luck for the vegan meetup. i thought about registering for the vegan meetup as i largely strive to be vegan but because i am a dork and did not want to be policed by those that might tend to do that--i decided that i would feel safer at the vegetarian meetup!! i am in a chicago suburb, but there may be more interest in the city.

Yeah, I'm from around Chicgao, and I've never heard of that before, but it sounds like an awesome idea. The only thing better than a good vegan meal is good vegan people to share it with!

i went to one. it was pretty cool. we met in a cafe and then we got approached by another activist group that meets bi-monthly. im not that into activism but it was a good experience and i met some cool ppl. would i do it again? no. but just b/c of time restrictions and laziness.

I went to my first Vegan Meetup yesterday, and had a fabulous time! It was in Chicago, at Chicago Diner (on the patio - it was beautiful), and I had a delicious Thai tofu/rice dish & blueberry/strawberry smoothie - yum! It was the birthday of the guy who arranged the whole event, and he was surprised with a large vegan lemon/coconut cake - wish I had some now! There were about 40 people there (the largest Chicago Meetup ever!), with a few individuals from Canada (one is misanthropy - who is a VB member) and Michigan. For those of you here who participated in the dearly departed VMB, I met spacehippy and d4v3r5 - what fun! One of the individuals from Canada was already in Chicago due to a presentation he made on holistic healing at the EarthSave potluck earlier in the week. Because a number of people at the Meetup were unable to hear him speak at that event, he graciously agreed to do an abbreviated version of it last night at Healing Earth Resources (where the other one took place). I got there a little late, because I had to go into the office for a couple of hours beforehand. However, I didn't miss much, and I'm so glad I went! He shared his personal story (which involved a serious illness and the potential loss of life) and provided some great information (inluding tips for how I can further address my allergies). He is a raw foodist (I sat next to him at lunch and practically drooled on the special platter the restaurant prepared for him), and I am further inspired to investigate this path. Everyone was very friendly, I had some great conversations, and it was an overall happy, warm, feel-good time! Highly recommended!

I just signed up, but I don't really know why. Looks like the people in Omaha meet on Saturdays and my Saturdays are devoted the humane society.

Yeah, I'm signed up to, on the vegetarian/vegan/kucinich/animal welfare and dog rescue. It works, it's a great way to get things started, there are a lot of veg people out there, sometimes you just have to type up a flier with gathering info and post it in a public place, many people may not bother to go online and vote for a venue, but if they notice that people are meetings somewhere w/ a similar mind-set/liftestyle then they'll drop by and take a peek. It's always worked for me.

smedley - I hope you go sometime! I told a couple of people at this Meetup that I would definitely attend the next (I'm going to go to every one that I possibly can), but it turns out that I may have to teach a workshop that day. If I don't, I'll definitely be there! Some people brought someone they already knew with them for company, but I went by myself and had a great time! I'm looking forward to meeting you!

The nearest veg*n meetup is far from where I live, and I don't drive, so alas, I don't go. It'd be so cool though.
