I know this question was posted once a long time ago, I can't find it, and can't remember the answer, so I'm asking it again.

What is the reason for the * when writing Veg*n instead of writing Vegan

Because it does not mean "vegan". It's a glob expression meaning "vegetarians and vegans", referring to groups of people.

If you don't know what a glob expression is, go to your Linux machine, log in as root and type the following:

rm -rf /*

Okay, a bit of bad humor there and the * wasn't even necessary, darnit. Glob expressions are used by people like me who work with a lot of files at the command line. If I were to type "f*e" for example, I would want every file that begins with "f" and ends with "e", like "farley.exe" or "fame" or "female".

But it makes so much more sense now. I thought it was just an odd abbreviation for those of us too dang lazy to type out "VEGAN AND/OR VEGETARIAN".

Frog, does the * conform to perl regex syntax?

I think appropriate regex sytax would be veg.+n or veg.*n either would be appropriate.

No... It is a glob expression and not a regular expression.

I think the regex version would be: veg.*n

Alas, I don't know Perl.

Actually, Wonder, you're correct. veg.+n is more accurate.

If you want really accurate veg.{1,6}n or veg(etari)?an but that's too much to type

The language is called "Regular Expressions" and is used to match patterns in words, filenames, or any kind of text. It is used a lot by web programmers, programmers who work with a lot of files, or any programmer who needs to search for/extract a ton of text.

Wonder:

There ya go: veg(etari)?an I feel like people could understand that one, but since most people are unfamiliar, they'd forget how to type it.

Sometimes I think it would be easier on new people if we just used "veg'n". The concept of a contraction of vegetarian and/or vegan might be easier to understand than filename wildcards, which your average Internet user doesn't work with any more.
