As well as being a new vegan, I've also recently been tested as gluten intolerant (which basically means no wheat, barley, rye, or products containing these grains). Well, I decided that now is as good a time as any to address it - since I'm already reading labels like crazy, I might as well watch for gluten too. I'm here to tell you that it's not as hard as I thought it would be! What a relief.

The biggest thing to watch for is actually fake meat, like Texturized Vegetable Protein, Texturized Soy Protein, and Seitan. All of these have wheat in them, as far as I can tell. So that means no Boca Burgers for me! But tofu and tempeh are fine. I've recently downloaded a gluten-free recipe for nutburgers that sounds really good - if they're a success, I'll post the recipe.

As for breads, I've found Brown Rice Tortillas and a host of breads by Food 4 Life that are all vegan and gluten-free. I just bought the raisin-pecan bread and it is tasty!

I also found some gluten-free flour by Bob's Red Mill, that is really pretty good. I made some of Isa Chandra Moskowitz's Ginormous Peanut Butter Cookies (that's probably not the exact name) with the flour, and they were Y.U.M.

Hm, what else? Well, soy sauce has wheat so that's out, but the Bragg's Liquid Aminos is actually better. And Tamari is often wheat-free.

Anyone else dealing with this? If you've been told to give up gluten but are nervous, don't be! It fits in really nicely with a vegan diet. I'd love to hear other ideas or suggestions or whatever. Thanks!

Oh, and if you're curious about the gluten-free thing, I have described a VERY cursory overview of it here. There's a lot more to it, so you may want to check out one of the many websites, like www.celiac.com.

Interestingly enough, someone just posted a free online vegan cookbook in the vegan forum of craigslist which just so also happens to have mostly gluten free recipes in it:

http://www.vitalita.com/docs/ATasteOfVitality.pdf
