Update: The vote on a bill to completely outlaw vivisection in the Brazilian city of Rio De Janeiro has been pushed back to August. If you did not have time to write before, please do it now! >>>

Help Rio De Janeiro Outlaw Vivisection!

A law is being argued in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro that would completely outlaw vivisection--not just product testing, but *all* animal experimentation! This would be, to our knowledge, the first such law passed anywhere in the world, representation a major step forward in the movement against animal testing.

The law was authored by City Counselor Claudio Cavalcanti; a message from him is copied below. Remarkably, the law was approved by the council earlier this year, but then vetoed by the mayor. A hearing is set for August to argue the law and attempt to overturn the veto.

Activists in Brazil are reaching out to the worldwide animal rights movement for support. Please write to the key Rio de Janeiro city council members at the address below expressing your support of the law to ban animal experimentation! Please send your letters or e-mails out today!

Activists in Brazil are also requesting organizations from around the world mail in official statements in support of the bill. Please notify any organizations you are active with and request they do so right away!

On behalf of our friends from Brazil, thank you!

Statement from Claudio Cavalcanti:

To all anti-vivisection and animal rights activists in Brazil and the world:

I hereby, make an appeal to all animal rights and anti-vivisection activists from Brazil and worldwide to please express their support in favor of the law to which I am the author, which prohibits vivisection and scientific experiments on animals in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

This law was approved by the City Council in March of this year, but was vetoed by the Mayor. It will return to the City Council of Rio de Janeiro, following official procedures, when the Mayor´s veto will be evaluated and either endorsed or rejected by the majority voting. We will need 26 votes to overturn the Mayor´s veto.

In case the Mayor´s veto is overturned, this law will represent the liberation of animals from laboratories in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and this will set a national and international precedent to end the systematic and continuous torture of millions of animals worldwide.

This is urgent. The voting may happen anytime this week, possibly on Thursday, June 1st. (Editor's Note: Voting is now scheduled for August.)

City Counselor
