I went to the dr. today and was told I have an URI.. I was prescribed an antibiotic, but I was wondering if it is absolutely necessary to take, or will it eventually go away on its own or if there was something else I could do.. I'm not a fan of medication in any form.. thanks in advance

It could go away on it's own. It could also turn into pneumonia and kill you. It's probably best to ask the doctor.

an upper respiratory infection = a cold. It could be bacterial, could be viral. If it's viral, the antibiotics will not do anything. If it's bacterial, they will. Most colds are viral and will just run their course. How long have you been sick? Do you have a sore throat or cough that won't go away? lots of sinus pain?

I ahev had an upper respiratory infection before . . . . a viral one. It took several weeks to go away. The medication given to me by the doctor had no effect, so I was just advised to take it easy and increase my intake of vitamin C.

Whatever you do, don't take part of the antibiotics. It's either all of them or none, or else you'll just wind up breeding resistant strains.

Zinc, garlic, a cup of hot chocolate (just water, cocoa powder and a little dash of soy milk) with cayenne pepper and an antihistamine (when I can't tell whether it's an allergic reaction or a cold) are my methods of choice. And then there's always salt pastilles, lemon juice, tiger balm, and saline nasal spray.

Most URIs are viral like rabid_child said. And the question is: did your doctor test for ESR/CRP and leukocyte level before he prescribed the antibiotic? If he didn't test you, chances are high that you take the antibiotic unnecessarily. And try some of Snow Whites tips.
