Please, take a minute to send a message to PetSmart today.

Away from public view and off-limits even to many of PetSmart's employees, PetSmart's back rooms hide away the immense suffering of the littlest companion animals.

At the PetSmart store in Manchester, Connecticut, a location that PetSmart boasts of as having an "exceptional pet care record," PETA's undercover investigation documented more than 100 animalsincluding hamsters, domestic rats, lizards, chinchillas, and birdswho lay hopelessly, just waiting to die, in the store's "Sick Room," deprived of desperately needed veterinary care and wasting away out of customers' sight.

Please join PETA in calling on PetSmart to end live-animal sales.

Thank you for speaking out for those who cannot.

I hate this...I couldn't watch the video but I sent the e-mail and will forward a letter! And I sent it to my family and friends via e-mail.

I got both my recent adoptions through groups that use Petsmart to show animals. The groups that use fosters don't really have any other way for the public to find them other than petfinder.

Does anyone know of any pet store chains that don't sell animals? I'm willing to bet that PETA is doing a serial style attack. Go after the biggest one first (bc they are probably all guilty at least in some stores), get that store to raise the standards, then if the rest don't follow, attack the next biggest chain.

Not a bad strategy, but I don't really feel any of the other stores are better. I could look into getting petfood online.

Here's some info on PetCo:

http://www.petascript.org/mt/compindex.html

http://www.peta.org/feat/PETCOAgreement/default.asp

PETA ended its campaign against PetCo, because they agreed to stop selling large birds... (Just to note, I don't agree with PETA's decision.) They took down their PETNO and PetCoCruelty sites, so I guess I was lucky to find that link above with complaints on record with PETA from PetCo customers. And this might be of interest: http://www.animalliberationfront.com...useAtPetco.htm About a recent lawsuit. I just skimmed it.

I wasn't able to find anything on Animal Kingdom; where is that store located? Is it a national group of stores?

I notice more often that small, local "pet stores" only sell supplies instead of animals. The same goes for online-only stores. I'll do some searching around and see if I can come up with any national supply stores.

Three of my cats were adopted from local shelters out of PetSmart. I assumed because they only adopt out dogs and cats (ie. don't sell them) that they actually gave a ship about animals. Now I find they don't. And that totally sucks.

Thanks so much for the info veggiejanie! Good to know. I was only going to Petsmart and Petco to get litter since I like to buy the huge bag. I am sure I can find somewhere else to go.

Pet store hall of shame:

I don't know how accurate any of these claims are, so as always, be careful and do some research yourself just to be sure!
Ooo, thanks for this too! I didn't see Pets Supplies Plus on the list. I think that only some of their stores stock live animals. Next time I need to buy litter, I am going to go to the Pet Supplies Plus by me and check it out. I remember I bought one of my cat trees there along time ago and I don't remember seeing any live animals. Anyone know anything else about Pet Supplies Plus?

For those concerned about adopting cats/dogs from petsmart, they aren't acutally involved w/ adoption. The store donates food, litter, space and actually gives the individual charity extra money ($5) for a survey filled out during adoption, they only make money off supplies normally purchased at the time of adoption. PLEASE don't stop adopting from these places, the cat rescue I work with would go under if petsmart didn't allow us to use their facilities.

Any large chain is going to have animal death/cruelty however I still feel petsmart is a better choice than Petco. Petco's reptile section is a joke, and I'm not any happier with their small animal section. Every animal I've checked in petsmart has at least been displayed on appropriate substrate with appropriate food and at an appropriate themperature. The Petco down the street is selling iguanas displayed on a deadly substrate, eating food that will kill them and at a temperature where they are unable to digest/function. I won't shop there.

Typically I only purchase things from a local store which doesn't sell live animals, unless I can only get it at petsmart (local store doesn't have a fish section and I have a rescue tank).

While I would certainly want Petsmart to stop selling live animals I still feel they are one of the better big chains out there.

This may sound weird, but I have never liked the atmosphere in Petco.

The one near us stinks to high heaven. Still, now that you guys have

brought this issue to light,I think I'll mosey on by this weekend and

check things out.

I'm not familiar with reptiles. What will I be looking for other than

the obvious such as wounds, etc...?

Virtually every pet store I've ever been in has ranged from deficient to downright cruel. I don't think they can be run humanely on a business scale.

Besides, there's something just twisted about an "animal store."
