Last July or so, these college kids from Columbus were on my street asking for money. I gave in and donated $30. Or so I thought.

Although I generally give my credit card statements a brief overview, I have a lot of items on there, and a lot are to things with green or earth or peace or whatever in the name.

Well I looked a little closer today. I noticed Greenpeace has been charging me $30 a month for the last 10 months!! I called my credit card company and they will dispute the last 3 months of charges for me and credit my account, and I can ask that the earlier ones be investigated or whatever. I am also writing to greenpeace asking that they prove I authorized that much or credit my account.

I know Greenpeace is in the red (one of the most in debt NPOs), but really.

Let this be a lesson, I thought I was responsible but even I let this one slip by. Or only make one time donations with checks. Good thing is, at least I will be getting some money back.

wow that sucks..

i wonder if the person who asked for the donation let it slide that this would be a monthly donation, you know, knew you did not realize that a monthly donation was what you were agreeing to?

Well, he had me sign up on this photocopied paper that you could barely read, like they had xeroxed the same thing 5 times, then sent it through a fax from 1985. So there was probably some small print or something I couldn't read, or they couldn't read and assumed it was monthly. But yeah, at least it wasn't for something horrible. I'm still going to try to get my $270 back, though!

Unbeleiveable. I used to have some respect for greenpeace. It is hard to continue that though when you hear stories such as these.

Have you tracked it and verified that it is actually Greenpeace and not some pretender using their name as a scam? My son is a fireman and thieves use the name of his district to steel from people every now and again. The fire hall takes the wrath of the community and the thieves float free.

Even so, thanks for the heads up. I hope the finances of your good intentions come back to you threefold.

i wouldn't necessarily be angry with Greenpeace though as it could easily be the fault of the volunteer who came around and not of the organization itself

have they sent you anything for contributing? they send me a magazine every few months and i got a calendar last year, but also a rep calls me every few months and gives me an update on their campaigns over the phone. nice guy. (course he also then asks me to raise my donation amount every time but is understanding when i say i can't)

i hope they'll do whatever they can to fix the mistake anyway, that's a lot of money to lose without knowing it

eta: oops kamila has a good point, we seem to have posted at the same time so i missed it. there was talk that there's a scam around here where people pose to be with the gas company and try to sign you onto something that's supposed to save money on your bill and really you end up giving them money and your bill doesn't change. the gas company let it be known that they're not affiliated and we should report them when these people come to the door. there could be a similar scam using GP's name. scary that someone would try to make money off a NFP

They did send me a membership card and call me once. Once in a while I get a little flyer about their campaigns. I doubt it is on purpose, but really, you have to be careful with charging to people's accounts.

Can you explain a little more about how someone could pose as someone else on a credit card statement? i don't think that is the case, it says the same thing each month starting from the month that I actually made the donation and got the phone call, membership card, etc.

yeah if you got a membership card and campaign flyer it's probably not a scam then. maybe just a new volunteer who didn't really know what they were doing, or had been out getting donations all day, was tired, and forgot to explain a few things

but was $30 the amount they asked for or did you offer that much? my monthly donation is only $18.

they're fairly quick to catch mistakes usually though, when i signed on i accidentally went through the US website and someone called me to say i'd been charged in US funds and they'd switch it over and credit my account for the difference. woops

Yeah, I wouldn't call that stealing. And, I love you Thalia, but you can't abdicate the responsibility for looking at your credit card bills. If you'd simply looked at your statements early on you could have put a stop to this right away!

Here's hoping you at least find the happy medium of getting your last three months reimbursed.

BTW, have you tried contacting Greenpeace directly?

Thats strange i was approached about a month or two ago by greenpeace and now donate $10 Au dollars a month but the contract i had to sign was very very clear i mean i think it even said in bold letters 'a month'. It was also very obvious that they were asking for montly donations.

Don't blame them entirely though those people aren't greenpeace employees their sales people and i've worked in sales people will do almost anything to get more (yes for some that me huge liars)

Oh, I know it was my fault for not looking at the bills, but that does not mean that they didn't do wrong by charging something I didn't authorize. My not looking at the bill may prevent me from getting all of my money back from my credit card, and I fully accept that, but it doesn't mean I don't deserve money back from Greenpeace.

An erroneous charge is an erroneous charge. I mean, what if they did it on purpose? That would be illegal, and my not catching it in time doesn't make it no longer illegal.

Maybe those kids were making a commission. And if so, maybe the kid could have done something unkosher. In fact, as I think back, I remember saying I did not want to make a monthly committment bc I already gave monthly to npr and farm sanctuary (and he said that was cool, and he talked about Buckeye egg farm, etc.), and I asked if I could make a one time gift. It's all coming back now......

I decided on the $30 amount.

I do admit full shame and embarassment for not keeping better track, but no doubt, I am going to send out a letter first thing Tuesday. (that is how I am going to contact them, I just found out about this today.)
