What a strange sad crazy week this has been....

Okay so I work at a homeless shelter and am used to crazy weeks, but this week everything is just piling up.. Saturday when I come in to work I learned that a middle-age guy had been found dead in the bathroom. The next day I learn that one of the residents who has just moved out that week was found dead in his hotel room. These were both guys that I knew from my daily interactions with them, but didn't know them that well. But then Tuesday one of the residents who I knew pretty well murders another one of our residents outside of the shelter! Apparently he was in his car when he saw his girlfriend walking with another man and revs up to them running them both over, then backs up and runs over the woman two more times killing her. I didn't know the woman that well, but the guy who killed her I knew very well and talked to him everyday because he's one of the guys who gets up early (I work 3rd shift). I learn today in the paper that he was just released from 25 years in prison for killing his past wife. I never, ever, would have guessed his past history or propensity for violence from my daily interactions with him.

Oye. Lets just say, I'm glad my vacation starts Friday because I don't know how much more of this crazyness I can take this week. !! ...

Whoa, that's a little too much 'real life' for me! Sorry you had to experience it. I hope you stay safe and get to re-charge during your vacation! I give you props for all the volunteer work you do! Good job!

Oh my GOSH! Kpickell, what a HECK of a week you've had.

If you weren't already scheduled for vacation, I would have strongly recommended that you take a bit of time off! Wow!

Are you doing OK though? I mean, do you have support there - friends or family or whatever - people you can talk to?

Take it easy, hug your furry friends, talk to people who care and will listen. That's quite a lot to go through, but in one week? agh, I feel for you - Way too much to deal with!

Thanks, although actually I get paid a salary for my work there, so it's not volunteer work.

And yeah, I'm doing okay personally, so I'm just trying to keep everyone else there in my thoughts. My coworker is the one who found the first gentleman unconcious and turning blue, so she was quite distraught about it (I was off that night), and of course the case managers who worked with each of them are pretty affected as well as so many of the residents because it is kind of like a home there, and everyone gets to know everyone.

I'm rather glad to be going on vacation (smokey mountains with the dogs for a week) because it has been a pretty stressful couple of weeks even aside from the deaths. And I'd swear it's a full moon with the night I had last night. To give you an idea of the fun we had, between myself and 3 other staff members we first spent four and a half hours trying to reason with a delusional schizophrenic, attempting to convince him that checking in and having a place to stay is better than going on the streets in his physical health (and mental) condition, but he was just too afraid the government would get him if he signed anything.

So, one more night of work and then off for a 9 days.

I am really sorry for this, and hope you do not let it get you down too much. But it occurs to me that this guy might have just been "institutionalized" by 25 years in prison, and killing his girlfriend was his ticket back.

Kpickell I am so sorry you had to go through this! That's really rough and I don't know hardly anyone, if anyone, that could handle all of that! Good luck, and enjoy your vacation! Try to keep your mind off of your work as much as you can!

I'm so sorry. Your week sounds like mine. All these 'friend of a friend's from the same neighboring high school have been dying in tragic ways (one got hit by a police car, one caused a car wreck that killed herself and an elderly couple two days after getting her license...).

By the way, I really think it's great that you work at a homeless shelter. I don't think I have the emotional strength to do something like that.

Wow, kp, that's a lot to handle. Out of curiousity, what does the homeless shelter do by way of security to help keep the residents safe?

Sorry you've had such a bad week - I hope it gets better.

(Some people say that deaths happen in 3's, so maybe you're done for now.)

Kel, if it is any consolation to you, of all the people I have met on this board, you have the compassion for handling just such situations as this. Your fellow workers couldn't have a better rock to lean on. It is a gift, and you seem to have it. Do you know anyone else who could do it better than you? I didn't think so.

^^^ The part of you, kp, that makes this a difficult situation, is the same part of you that is valuable to everyone else in the shelter. Work it, work it!
