Hello all,

I recently came across this site while searching for recipes using TVP.

I make the usual ones like chilli, spaghetti sauce, cottage pie.

I would like to use TVP in recipes that are different and a little more interesting than the norm. Hope you can help.

Thanks

On my blog, I have a recipe for TVP crunch wraps, like the ones from Taco Bell. They're vegan and gluten free if you use a gluten free tortilla. ^^

Also:

TVP Sloppy Joes:

8 oz tomato sauce
1 cup tvp, reconstituted in 3 tbsp Braggs/soy sauce+2/3 cup boiling water for 10 mins
1 red or green bell pepper, minced
1 medium onion, minced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp brown sugar
1/2 tbsp vegan Worcestershire
1/2 tbsp Braggs/soy sauce
1 Tbsp vegan butter or canola oil
Burger buns for serving

Heat oil over medium heat, add onions. Saute for 5 minutes. Add garlic and bell pepper, saute for 2-4 minutes, until softened. Stir in brown sugar, tomato sauce, Worcestershire, braggs, and 1/4 cup water. Bring to a simmer and add reconstituted tvp. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until flavors are blended. Serve on buns.

I have the same bag of TVP I got from going veg'n in 2009!
I disliked it that much! I guess I should check it...

Is it like Morningstar or Boca crumbles, cause I don't those either
Maybe I should make a loaf?

Can you make a cereal like Grape Nuts? If you reconstitute and bake? I'd like that!

I didn't like it at first either, until I started putting spices in it when I reconstitute it. It's kinda like tofu that way.

I like tofu as is--tastes like tofu

I just remember not liking the texture--reminded me of bad ground beef
I've had TVP in canned chilis and felt the same.
Is there a method to cooking?

The method is: for every cup of tvp, no more than 3/4 cup liquid if you want it to have a decent texture. Ground beef is technically what the tvp flakes are supposed to mimic, but I really like TVP chunks and Butler Soy Curls - same concept, a lot more "meaty" like mimicking chicken or beef. Because we're gluten free, I use them pretty extensively as a substitute for seitan.

Thanks Aliakai.

I will definitely try the Crunch Wraps. They sound delicious.

Made the sloppy joes yesterday, and ate them with a green cabbage slaw - very good.

Thanks again for the recipes.
You're welcome! I post them periodically to my blog, so if you're ever looking you can check there. I'd love to see you stick around in the community, there are a ton of great recipes posted regularly, and we'd love to have you. :)
