I read about food a lot. I am addicted to food porn, food blogs and recipe books. But I rarely try new recipes and when I do, I hardly ever follow them to the letter. Instead I get the 'gist' and end up making a total mess, retreating back to my vaguely tried n true safe foods.

So I have resolved to try at least 3 new recipes a week, to try them properly and actually follow the instructions. I figured I'd start a thread because it would be fun if other people joined me! Let us know how you get on, maybe even post some pics...

Anyone in?

I am! At least until school starts back up, then it might be one new recipe a week.

Ok first up, I wanted to try something really simple:

Yeah That Vegan ****'s Sexy Kalamata Tapenade (Sorry for phone photo)

What was I saying about following recipes to the letter? Well, I didn't. I couldn't find capers and I hate them anyway, so I didn't bother with them. Also, there was already rosemary in the olives, so I didn't add parsley and for some reason I picked up blackberry balsamic vinegar...

So anyway, it was alright. No where near as mind blowing as sold, but pretty good. Capers I think would have made it way too salty and it was a bit over garlicky (and I LOVE garlic). I don't know if you can tell from the photo, but it was a gorgeous colour. Even though it made quite a lot, it's a very expensive recipe. Probably not something I'll be making again til I have unlimited cash.

I did really like the idea though and am quite keen to try something like it again, just with cheaper ingredients.

Now I have a few sun dried tomatoes left and a bottle of blackberry balsamic, hope to find a use for them!

This is a fun idea
I try to update my blog at least 2 times a week but this could encourage me to do more, or at least enjoy looking at everyones creations.

Yally, you're so funny, you adapted right from the get go!

I'm useless for this thread. I don't EVER follow recipes. Nope.

Well you don't have to follow recipes, that's just something I need to at least try to stick to! Just post when you try anything new, even if you make it up yourself

I've picked my first recipe! I'm gonna make Fresh Tomato Soup with Sweet Corn Sauce from Vegan Soups and Hearty Stews for All Seasons.

But first I need to go shopping for the ingredients, and clean out the fridge, so it'll probably be tomorrow or friday before I can post a pic.

Okay, cool!

I made something I haven't made in this exact combination before...I had some random vegetables on hand and the request to make something "creamy".

1/2 a Maui onion, sliced thin and 9 cloves of sliced garlic sauteed in 2 tsp. coconut oil until soft.

Next, I added in 1 chopped medium sized zucchini, 2 c. chopped Napa cabbage and 2 c. baby spinach, and sauteed until all was cooked through.

Then, I put 1 1/2 c. cooked cannelini beans, stirring until combined and warmed, then I turned the burner off.

Finally, I squeezed 1/2 a lemon on to the mixture, sprinkled 1 T. crushed red pepper, 1 tsp. lemon omani powder (Persian spice), 2 heaping T. nutritional yeast and 2 tsp. umeboshi vinegar and combined it all.

Lastly, I mixed in 1/2 c. vegan sour cream.

The result was a savory, spicy, creamy and delicious dish!

I think I'll try this next: http://www.cuisine.com.au/recipe/persian-red-lentil-dip

It will be a lot cheaper and I'm pretty sure I have most of the ingredients already. Guess I'm into dip type things right now

But I'll probably leave it til next week, I'm pretty much set for food to last before I go away on Friday. I may try making a black olive tapenade with the rest of the tomatoes...

Today I made my own version of spinach goma dare which is blanched spinached in a sesame seed sauce. I cheated and used tahini, added soy sauce, rice vinegar and brown sugar. Also a tiny splash of maggi which was probably a mistake.

It's not bad, not as good as in a restaurant but I like that I could make a massive portion

Same here...there always ends up being some ingredient, mostly some kind of spice, that I don't like. So I omit things and use substitutions often.
