Alright, so many of us have seen the video from www.meetyourmeat.com , right? I put a link up to that in my blog, and said if anyone wanted to watch it, they could, and maybe they'd learn something. So two of my friends watched, and had really bad reactions.

One of them sent me this:

Well, Allyssa, I watched part of that video. I do agree that these "methods" are terrible and cruel. I do. But you know what? We {me, linz and her youth leader} were talking about some of these "methods". We were very skeptical over the fact that people would bother catching pigs and beating them to death if they were slow growers, instead of just shooting them [not supporting them, allyssa, just making a point] and whats up with "if you drink milk you support the veal industry"...people cant live without calcium. And most calcium comes from dairy. I severely doubt, however convinced you are, that these so-called methods were money-induced acts taking advantage of poor farmers. People will do most anything to promote their standing on something. I would, I know that. And you know for which point. And earlier in this email, I was going to mention that God made animals for us to nourished. For our survival and our source. Of course, He didnt want them to be tortured. And basically, allyssa, if these people really kill creatures that are growing too slowly, I really REALLY dont think that theyd beat them head first on a cement floor, do you? and Im sure you are going to say "werent you watching?!" and I was. but I really dont believe it. I dont. But, well, I watched some, because you wanted me to, and I thought itd be educational, or something. Well, to be frank, it got stupid and unrealistic. Sorry. I tried.

I haven't responded to that yet. The other one wrote this:

The other day when we were at the zoo, we went to the new farm addition. I decided it was unfair to sell the animals to slaughter houses, especially for those kids on the farm who learn to love those animals like pets...no, like family. And Mom said she agrees, but that it's part of the circle of life. I finished for her, because I realized..."God does kill us too, doesn't he?" And she nodded. So...I don't know those people's reasons, and I don't intend to find out. But I'll let them do it. God's not stopping it, is he? I mean, sure, he's working through you all, but there are so many of them... Anyways. I can't speak for the birds, or the cattle, but I can for the pigs. My uncle raises pigs, a close friend of the family raises pigs, my Grandpa used to raise pigs...it's nothing like on that video. I've been there, in the building...I've SEEN the pigs. They are well-kept...plenty of space. And all the food they need. That video probably picked the worst-case scenario to show, not some of the best, or even normal ones. but you know, I could be wrong. As I always seem to be. Please, nobody be offended, or if you are, I'm sorry. Because it's only MY opinion. Golly...I'm paying for it too. Literally...I'm way over time today.

She was much nicer about it, so I responded. But the other person responded to hers with this.

thank you. I was trying to think of a way to say that. thanks! and seriously, allyssa, Im sorry, but the world isnt going to change because you want it to, and to tell you the truth, thw world isnt that bad. And like ellen said, WORST CASE SCENARIO! thats what they were looking for to make people feel guilty. thats all.

I don't know what the say to the first person. I want to say something, because she's the one that bashed my religion for a full week, and completely lost any respect I had for her. Do any of you have any ideas? Maybe, if I could put some of the things you say into a reply to her?

Thanks in advance, everyone.

Oh, and she had this in her profile in her blog... it just... makes me sad that she put it in there. Because I know that I'm the only veg*n she knows.

*I am NOT a vegetarian, and have arguments.

wow! they're really harsh, aren't they?! it almost seems defensive...

I'm not quite sure what you should say to them. I just know that if I wait awhile before responding to something like that, it's easier to communicate my point without being overly emotional about it. Good luck!

Their responses do sound harsh (esp. the first) but I bet if I showed those videos to certain members of my family, they'd have the same exact reactions. And I would never win any argument with them about it. Their ideas and attitudes are deeply entrenched. So if it were me, I probably wouldn't even try to convince them about the videos.

I have to say, I was disappointed when I read your post because the subject line sounded like your friends were neo pagans, and I was mightily curious!

Unless a person seems genuinely interested, I usually refrain from discussing the animal rights aspect of vegetarianism. It's an incredibly touchy subject for a lot of people, either because they feel a little guilty that they're contributing or they really do not care about animals at all (except maybe for their own pets, but "that's different") and only think of them as food. Unfortunately, I think most people don't actually care enough to be bothered.

I agree that you should wait to reply, but be prepared for another similar response.

I replied, not saying much, but she says she won't speak to me anymore now. *shrugs* I'm not losing much, to be honest.

Meo,

Say something like this....

I'm sorry you feel this way, this is something that I care deeply about. Calcium can be obtained through leafy green vegetables such as kale and brocolli. Many juices are fortified with calcium as well as soy milk. We obviously don't share the same views and that is fine, but I will continue to educate those who are willing to listen.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

You need not be a ***** to her, she's baiting you for battle. I have found in my 14 years as a vegetarian, that it is best not to battle, but to quietly educate. I almost always stay away from the animal welfare subject unless someone seems to be truely interested.

I would probably say very little, perhaps-

Quote:

I am glad you took the time to watch the video. It means a lot to me when my friends and family try to undertand where I am coming from and my reasons for being so passionate about veg*nism. It is a very important part of me. I certainly understand the points you are making, they are all points I considered as well in my decision to become vegetarian. At first it was very hard for me to even conceptualize the possibility of such treatment of animals. It took a while, and more research for it to even start to sink in. So, I understand that people will take the time to learn about, meditate on, and consider these issues at their own pace.

If you ever decide you would like to do some more research, let me know, and I will point you towards some of the many, many different sources of reliable information on this subject. However, I understand if you have no further interest. But thanks again for attempting to learn more about where I am coming from.

And then try not to discuss it anymore unless they were positively interested.

I hate when people use the "God's not stopping it, so why should we?" argument. God didn't stop the holocaust, either, nor did he stop ethnic cleansing in Africa, slavery, etc.

I don't know how long you have been friends with these folks, Meo, but the disrespect they show to your beliefs is really sad. I have had something similiar happen to me (although not quite so harshly) and I just decided that I can always make new friends. I don't need people in my life that don't take into consideration the things that are most important in my life.

Good luck dealing with them

I too was confused by the thread title.

Most people will not respond positively when their first exposure to a different point of view is from someone or something that comes on really strong - which Meet Your Meat and other PETA materials do. It's too bad that it is reflecting back on you, though, because all you did was make the video available; you didn't insist they watch it.

I'd just let it go if I were you. For the future, a better approach might be to just have a nonthreatening, low-key paragraph or page on your blog, written by you. Then you can direct the people who seem genuinely interested/receptive to stronger material elsewhere.

Muppetcow, I did use that in the response to her.

Missleigh, I've only been friends with them for... less than a year. And I'm still not sure why, because they've said things like this before.

Seusomon, I think that I'll try that instead if I ever want to say something again. Evidently pictures are too much for the people who read my blog, and they can't keep rude opinions to themself. *sighs*

Anyways, here's my response to one of them, who asked why I had to be such a drama queen about the whole issue. And just so you know... I've been known to be blunt/rude when I reply to things. *hangs her head in shame*

Drama queen? Okay, let's talk drama queens. Over religion, you have to prove to me that you're right and I'm wrong, and you simply can't give up. You take it to the point that I can't even stand to talk to you anymore, because that's all you'll talk about. We both remember what we said, so I don't even have to go back over that. You wound up moaning that I was "insulting your religion".

Don't you think that maybe, from what I see, you're insulting my vegetarianism? Yes, I do think that. Basically you're saying there's no reason for me to be one, and I'm not going to change anything.

I admit that I was a little rude about the religion thing, but in retrospect, so were you. Now, you're being rude about me being a vegetarian, and it's not the first time.

As everyone knows, religion is a very touchy subject. Abortion, human rights, and ANIMAL RIGHTS are a few others that people are incredibly touchy about.

I expected you'd get ticked when I didn't suddenly read the Bible and praise God when you told me to. I also expected my omni friends would get ticked for me even MENTIONING and animal rights thing in MY livejournal. I knew you'd get ticked because we don't see the same way over animals, and I hope you realized I'd get ticked that you were forcing your religion on me.

I got ticked that you were forcing your religion, you got ticked that I wasn't following what you think I should do. I got ticked that you were bashing the way I feel about animals, you got ticked that I wanted you to watch something as "stupid and unrealistic" (in your own words) as that.

End of story. I don't see why you had to even reply to that. Think what you want about it, and keep it to yourself. You know that I won't be pleased with what you think. And vice versa, too.

Have I made this clear enough, or do I need to elaborate?

It wasn't quite the politiest thing to say in parts.

Well, now that you say that the one bugs you about religion all the time, it makes me wonder what the basis for the friendships are.

And... her response to what I said.

I HAVE NO ISSUES WITH VEGETARIANS. At ALL. But when you try to make your "omni" {a vegetarian word for "jerks that eat meat?"} friends feel guilty for eating meat? Yeah, that "ticks me off". Sorry for being human. And no, I didnt get "ticked" that you didnt "read the bible and praise god" because I told you to. And I didnt even TELL you to. I suggested it. Soooorrrry. I agree that animals should not be TORTURED. but Allyssa, there's a line between tortured and being killed for food. Those people shooting that video found worst-case scenarios to make "omni's" feel bad. Well, I won't feel guilty. I'm sorry. And I don't want to insult you by saying anything about God, so I won't. I'll let you speculate. So. I hope you're pleased. You've ticked me off. But not for any of those reasons. NONE AT ALL.

===pitiful omni===

She lies through her teeth. She indeed forces her religion on me. Grrr... I'm not saying anything until... I've cooled down... again. Usually, I'd scream "BS!" at several things she said. Oh, the angst.

That first letter is downright rude. I'd say that this person isn't really that good of a friend. If she's a liar, and forces her religion on you (VERY annoying - I speak from experience), and she makes you mad, why are you friends with her? I've been in this situation way too many times. You've got to come to an understanding with her. My friend Mae and I used to be like that with religion and her lies all the time, but we decided to have a talk over it - I told her I would try to swear less around her, but she needed to stop pushing her religion on me, and I stuck up for my beliefs. But in turn, don't push veggie info on her unless she asks or something.

God's not stopping my plans for world domination. The death ray is being constructed as planned, and according to schedule.

Oh, back to the argument, umm, it's best not to be preachy about vegetarianism. And I can't believe your friend thinks that an omni is a derogatory term.

But then again, I really have this bias against religious people. One of my ex-g/f's friends was religious. I mistusted her greatly, because she was religious. (Oh, and for a few otehr reasons)

Anyhow, you're best off pointing out that you're not tyring to get eveyrone to go vegetarian, but that everyone should consider the origins of their food, and whether meat is actually necessary. (Which, of course, it isn't.)

If any "friend" of mine attacked my religion, the friendship would be over in one second flat. Life is way too short for such negativity. You should definitely *not* have to censor yourself in your blog. Sheesh. And you didn't tell them to become veg (as you say she told you to praise god), but she can tell you? Not worth your time.

And... for her last comment I've seen.

well. It certainly looks like I'm losing a friend, as Ellens pastor said...Ah...I dont want to. I really dont. She even said that other people tell her not to be friends with me...yeah. Its allyssa...I am so sad. I hope she cools down. And me too. I need to cool down. She just wanted to upset me. She succeeded. But for none of the dumb reasons she came up with. Ugh...*stomps and kicks around* ok. Im done now. *sighs...* If she wants to throw our friendship away...she can be my guest. Unfortunately. *a tear*

*screams* Should I even say anything to her, because I have a habit of needing to defend what I say. And honestly, I would not miss having her as a friend.

Anyways, she asked if I was having my "little vegetarian friends" read her blog, so if you want to, it's [ http://www.livejournal.com/users/psalms374/ ]. I honestly don't care if you read it, none of you were before, but now you can.
