I wanted to let you all know about something that worked for me when my cat had to take antibiotics. First I tried just putting the pill in front of her and telling her to eat it. She did actually lick it, but alas, she would not eat it.

Plan B- force her to swallow it. My mother makes this look so easy. Just pull back their head until they open their mouth, shove it in and Voila! Well My cat is very small, and although elderly, she is strong and agile. Wiggles like crazy, and of course I feel tons of guilt as soon as she starts yowling. She fortunately avoids scratching or biting me, but in my attempt to put the pill in her mouth, her teeth came down on me and punctured my skin. (Im fine now.)

Plan C- My cat likes these hairball treats made by Pounce (I have only found them at Petsmart). They are like tender vittles on the outside and have hairball goop on the inside. She swallows them whole. I put one of the pills inside, squeezed it back together, and gave her a "treat". She ate it, whole. Problem solved!

sounds handy. i've heard bad things about Pounce, but you could do that with any soft food or treat. my cat likes the hairball goop from a tube that they just lick off your finger, he usually ends up with the whole glob in one lick so i bet i could sneak a pill in there if needed. when he had to take antibiotics for a resperitory infection, i managed to get the pills in his mouth the same way your mom does, but i felt bad afterward cause he was very unhappy about the whole ordeal, especially after having to go in the car sit in the vet's office and have his temperature taken etc. he was one cranky kitty.

he's ticked off today because i tried to trim his claws. i bought trimmers like 2 weeks ago and have been attempting to use them almost every day since. finally my bf got fed up watching me and helped by holding the cat for me, since he doesn't squirm nearly as much for my bf as he does for me. doesn't bite as much either. i think maybe my cat hates me

my cats, at the shelter, usually eat around the pill when I try to hide in a treat or canned food... So I always have to resort to Plan B. Put pressure on the sides of their mouth and they'll open, unwillingingly, and you just gotta be fast... I throw a towel around the cats if they're known for scratching.

i usually just sit on the floor and trap him between my legs so i'm sorta sitting on him but without putting my weight down. if you position your feet just right behind you they can't back out though they try real hard. in this position they can't get a good shot in at ya so it works for me. doesn't work the best for ear cleaning though because he'll just duck his head down and pin his ears flat so i can't see what i'm doing, you have to approach them from the sides to be able to see inside the ears. very complicated stuff

the towel thing does not work for my cat, i don't know why. he's too squirmy and always gets a paw out and then he's outta there in a flash

I think mine does to ever since I brought the dog home she is a brat just to me of course! hehe She hides behind a door/corner and waits for me to walk by and then she jumps up and wraps her arms around my leg, waist whatever she can and tries to bite me!! CRAZY KIDS! I tried giving her medicine once, it was a liquid antibiotic and yeah my dad had to do it I ended up with it all over me.

hehe yeah when i try to clean my cat's ears i get the cleaning solution all over me. the one i used to use had a brownish colour and i found out quickly that it stains. everything. even the walls. doesn't taste too good either (they always manage to shake while your mouth is open huh)

i was so grateful when my vet suggested a different brand that happened to be clear.

in terms of my cat hating me, he doesn't really, not all the time. he sucks up to me for attention, the second i lie down on the couch he's curled up beside me, if i'm in bed he has to be under the covers and up against me. BUT if i try to give him attention when he's not bugging for it, i get in trouble. he's not as bad lately for some reason but for a while he'd get pretty mean and attack my hand viciously. he still pounces at me if he's ticked off but he'll just tap me with his paw, no claws, glare at me, and then pounce again. brat.

i can handle the taps, it was the savage clawing and biting that was getting to me

We have to give my cat 2 pills every day *sigh*

My parents cant do it, because he always gets away.

But what i do is i either get some one to hold him,

or i hold him down on a bench myself,

i put a finger in each side of his mouth and open it and tilt his head back,

Then someone else puts the pill in

you hold his head for 2 secs, then hes swallowed

and all done..

I just red back through that , and DAMN that sounds cruel and painful,

But i assure you its not, he doesnt even cry!

And my cat crys at everything...sometimes he crys if you look at him!!!

*DaNNy!*

My kitty is overweight and therefore has a lot of respitory problems - this sometimes requires giving her pills. Unfortunately the only way that I have found success is the hold her down and force her to swallow method. Except that I feel so guilty afterwards. Thankfully she hasn't bitten me yet, but she complains the whole time. I even tried putting the pill in her mouth when she meowed in complaint, but she is too smart for that. Poor baby. I tried crushing the pill and sprinkling it on her food, but she just ate around the tainted kibble then wouldn't touch her food until I washed the bowl.

I know I shouldn't have, but I just laughed myself weak reading this thread.

I don't have any trouble pilling cats. I think it must be a mind domination thing. I went over to an elderly neighbour the other day and insisted on giving his cat a worm pill as worms were emerging from it's bum.

I'm trying to think what I do. Hmm. Sit on the floor, sweep the cat up in my right crook of arm, under it's armits. Push right finger in corner of cat's mouth to open it and keep it there in the corner of the cat's mouth to stop it biting or closing it's mouth, insert pill in with left hand and down throat with index finger, then tickle adam's apple of cat to ensure it gulps and doesn't hide the pill under it's tongue to spit out the moment you let it go -simultaneously removing finger from the corner of it's mouth and stroking the cat.

With a half wild cat I'd wrap the cat in a bath sheet, swaddled like an egyptian mummy, but do more or less the same.

With a feral cat there are special yummy tasty pastes to put on their food so a pill insn't always necessary.

This morning a neighbour's cat turned up here, I thought he might be cold because there was a heavy frost last night. But no. He's found a broken biro and somehow rolled in it and had a thick gungy patch of blue ink caked into his side. Nothing would wash it off, not even margerine which seems to dilute a lot of gunge, so I took the sissors to him. He wasn't very pleased, but he hated the ink so he put up with it.

What I hate most is when they've eaten a piece of string and it's hanging out of their bum and someone has to deal with it.

the easiest way if the animal wont eat it in food...

is to wrap the animal, if its cat, in a towel...

push the pill into its mouth...

hold its mouth shut...

and either blow air onto its nose, or gently put your fingers over its noise

i used to work in a dog kennel, and that was generally the easiest way...

it sounds cruel... but it makes it happen faster which is less cruel

by covering their nose, they cant breathe and that makes them swallow

only takes about 4 seconds, and then its all over and done with, and they get a treat
