transitioning to vegan

I'm slowly transitioning to becoming a vegan since I'm currently pregnant and don't know a ton about what I should be eating to promote the health of my baby. I didn"t want to take on a change since i might not get the correct nutrition from lack of knowledge, but i've been doing pretty good eating tons of fruit and veggies since that is was I crave. I'm just wanting to know what others have done to go vegan. I'm currently dairy and egg free since my breastfeed son is allergic and I've noticed some dramatic changes in my health since I stopped eating that stuff two years ago. I also want to know how others have dealt with spouses/friends/relatives that make fun of the idea of going vegan and the idea of wanting to eat organic stuff. I'm not forcing anything on anyone since people will choose to do what they want, but if I don't want to eat meat and buy organic stuff I'm considered silly? Any advice would be great!

Welcome Tisha.

Some of VeggieBoards' contributors have had vegan pregnancies - I imagine they will have advice for you.

Hi Tisha,

You might find it useful to make an appointment with a Registered Dietitian who specializes in vegetarian diets and prenatal nutrition.

In the United States, you can find a local Registered Dietitian through this website: http://www.eatright.org . Just click on the "Find an Expert" button, located in the upper-right-hand portion of the webpage.

In the U.K., you can find a local Registered Dietitian on the Freelance Dietitians website: http://www.freelancedietitians.org/

In New Zealand, you can find a local Registered Dietitian through the Dietitians New Zealand website: http://dietitians.org.nz/find-a-dietitian/

In Canada, you can find a local Registered Dietitian at the Dietitians of Canada website: http://www.dietitians.ca/Find-a-Dietitian.aspx .

They mentioned B12 as well....I assume you're taking that already?
Personally my family doesn't make fun of me for being vegan or eating organic food, but to anyone whos family or friends thinks it's funny or silly to be vegan and eat organic food; it's not funny or silly at all. It's actually much healthier to eat a plant based diet, and eating organic is extremely healthy as well! Food that isn't organically grown is usually sprayed with pesticides, herbicides and fungicides which in reality are just toxic chemicals that contribute to poor health. Organic food is definitely the healthier option and you're not silly for wanting to eat food that's good for you, you're actually very smart! :)
