If you beat your significant other in Topeka, chances are you're gonna get off scott-free now. It's still illegal under state law, but nobody is prosecuting.<br><br>

Why not decriminalize non violent offenders instead.<img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/huh.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":huh:">

From what I can tell, this is a budget fight. Domestic violence is a must-arrest offense in Kansas, but by taking the laws off the books, the city doesn't have to prosecute the cases, but instead relies on others to.

We had something similar happen in Nashville during the past few years. It was not a repeal of the laws, but a police chief who basically refused to enforce them in favor of devoting resources to things like parking tickets, prosecuting offenses that would result in fines, and prosecuting easily solvable offenses that would make crime statistics look good.
