Yeah I saw that and was thinking the same thing. Nonetheless, I think the pendulum is beginning to swing back toward vegetarian and maybe vegan. I can remember when vegetarianism, sustainable living and environmentalism was being pushed in the media during the 1970's. Then slowly but gradually hedonism took over during the 80's through the early 2000's, but with war, famine, the death of the low carb nonsense and global warming, I think people are slowly re-learning or in some cases learning for the first time the lessons of the 1970's and I really believe more people are going to start trying vegetarianism. At least that is what I am hoping.

I was so annoyed! I actually turned it on during the commercials right before that segment and was wishing I had not. What a moron. That woman needs to update her education in nutrition. Where did they dig her up?

According to the China Study, part of the reason that animal proteins are bad could be that their completeness accelerates the growth of cancer.

Okay, this peeves me for a different reason. Most of us -- even dieters -- get more protein than we really need.

Here's where I feel she would need correction on some points. I've done a lot of lay research, but I am not a nutritionist.

Can you get too much protein?

Some medical experts suspect a link between protein and bone loss. Calcium is used in the process of eliminating unused (excess) protein from your body.

What amino acids does your body need?

Hmmmm.... Maybe I am too technical (and yet, not knowledgeable enough), but I think there exist many more amino acids than the ones we typically consume. Even then, there are certain amino acids that are not necessary for us to consume and can be produced by our body: such as the protein cartilidge is made out of. Saying we need "all the amino acids" is dubious. I am sure she meant all the ones you would find listed in a nutrition book... Even then, it's just not completely correct.

I didn't see the TV show, but that article Vegan Joe linked does say that soy is a complete protein, and describes it as "a great low fat source of protein." My only problem with the written article is the author hasn't gotten the memo that protein combining isn't necessary. Well, and it doesn't mention the dangers of high-protein diets for healthy people, such as increased occurrence of kidney stones and osteoporosis. Well, and they seem to think the the only plant foods that have protein are nuts, seeds, and legumes. OK, so maybe I had a lot of problems with the article...

I never watch the Today show, but I read the article and I promptly sent the Today show an e-mail pointing out the innacuracies in the segment. I strongly encourage you all to do the same!

I'm not surprised. I sat through sixty minutes of The Today Show the other morning and I must say I didn't laugh once.
