Plants don't have a face and a mommy. Those are the standards I go by....

We don't need to eat anyone who would run, swim, or fly away if he could. ~James Cromwell<br><br>
A vegetarian is a person who won't eat anything that can have children. ~David Brenner<br><br>
I will not eat anything that walks, runs, skips, hops or crawls. God knows that I've crawled on occasion, and I'm glad that no one ate me. ~Alex Poulos<br><br><br>
I love all of these quotes. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/smiley.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":)">

Tell them they are idiots if they think plants have a brain or a nervous system and to pick up a book or at the least just google something.

I was going to go this route. I recently read Vegan Freak and they pretty much described it this way: cut a cow/pig/chicken/fish/etc and it will try to get away. It feels pain. Cut a piece of broccoli and it doesn't try to get away. It does not feel pain.

Even if you accept the ridiculous notion that plants can feel pain, the plants would only be killed anyway to be fed to all the herbivorous farm animals that omnis insist on eating. You should just tell them you prefer to get the nutrients directly from source, rather than filter them through a doomed, cruelly-treated animal first. Only one thing needs to die that way.

Anyone using that argument is obviously completely against vegetarianism and isn't interested in having a serious discussion. I don't usually get into an argument with someone when I know it won't go anywhere. I'd probably just stare at the person for a minute with no expression and then say something like, "Wow, really?" in a really deadpan voice. Then I'd ignore them if I could. I just don't think people with that sort of attitude are worth talking to.<br><br>
P.S. No one has ever said that to me, btw. I guess I'm lucky.

Yeah, normally I try not to be too harsh but people who say things like that are clearly not serious and just trying to mess with you. I'd probably just say "Do you REALLY believe plants can feel pain? Have you ever taken a basic biology class?" <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/inquisitive.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":stinkeye:">

You ask, "Do you think plants feel pain?"<br><br>
Depending on how they answer, you move to either:<br><br>
"Me neither. I don't eat animals because they suffer in order to become meat. I eat plants because, like you, I'm not worried that they suffer."<br><br>
or<br><br>
"That's interesting. Well, did you know that by eating only plants I am responsible for fewer plant deaths than someone who eats both animals and plants? All the nutrients we need are available in plants. If you eat animals, you're basically just eating nutrients from plants filtered through animal flesh. It's an inefficient process that results in excess plant and animal death."<br><br>
Then change the subject quickly to either: environmental destruction of eating animals, health benefits of eating plants, rampant animal cruelty that exists on most "farms", or something else entirely.

I usually answer: "why would I want to eat anything that can **** or ****?" <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/tongue3.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":p">

That's generally my flippant response: "I don't eat anything that takes a sh*t."

Here's what I say: "If it once had eyeballs, I don't eat it."</div>

That's what I tell my mom when she wants me to eat food with fish products in it.
