Small Brains Mean No Pain For Cows

By Rajeev Syal

LONDON TIMES - April 2003

LONDON Meat eaters, rest easy: Cows cannot feel pain, the largest study into bovine neurology has concluded.

The study of James D. Rose, a professor of zoology and physiology at the University of Wyoming, has concluded that awareness of pain depends on functions of specific regions of the cerebral cortex that cows do not possess.

Mr. Rose, said previous studies that indicated cows can feel pain had confused "nociception" responding to a threatening stimulus with feeling pain.

"Pain is predicated on awareness," he said. "A person who is anaesthetized in an operating theater will still respond physically to an external stimulus, but he or she will not feel pain.

"Anyone who has seen a chicken with its head cut off will know that while its body can respond to stimuli, it cannot be feeling pain."

Mr. Rose said he was enormously concerned with the welfare of cows, but that given his findings, campaigners should concentrate on ensuring that they were able to enjoy clean and well-managed pastures and fields.

Despite the new findings, a spokesman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which has spent millions campaigning for the rights of farm animals, said: "We believe that eating cows is barbaric. Of course animals can feel pain. They have sensitivity, if only to avoid predators."

If this is true, it really kinda makes you think twice about vegetarianism!

"Once a year, many science periodicals lighten up by burying an April Fools story among the usual, more serious scholarship. Beginning in 1994, Discover has joined in this illustrious tradition. The following parodies have appeared in the Breakthroughs section of our April issues. Some readers got taken in, some caught on to us right away--and some, as you'll see, decided to take our joke even farther. Did you pick out the ringer? [NOTE - Discover stopped running an April Fool's article after 1998.] "

I'm still confused. Discover said they stopped running jokes after 1998, right? And that article about fish pain, is that real or not?

Either way, I would find it hard to believe any vertebrate could not feel pain.

Thalia, the fish pain article is legit. Discovery actually had nothing to do with either article. I just edited the fish article to make it April Fools worthy. Today is afterall my favorite holiday.

I know that the article was just a joke, but what did you mean by this? Do you think that the only reason some people refuse red meat is because of the cows?

You said "some people". I think some people (like me) do refuse to eat cows because of the way cows are treated. Other people may not care how animals are treated and only want to be healthy. There are many reasons to be vegetarian, but animal welfare is my main reason for going veg. It's not the only good reason, but for some people it's the determining reason.
