Reggae... a mixture of jazz, R&B and skank (the dance and musical style). A socially relevant, radical music style critical of oppressive governments, economics and politics; but without any of the residual antiestablishment anger of the punk movement. Instead reggae artists channel their anger to talk about subjects such as ignorance, war, the irresistible human longing for liberty and redemption. Sure, Babylon, the political, economic and cultural institutions that oppress the poor, set themselves up as normative, and force us to worship the idols of money and individualism are evil (and we are in a way set in our own Babylonian Captivity), but love, not war, is the answer, and will lead us in an exodus from the halls of today's Babylons to the promise of Zion. "Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, because none but yourself can free your mind!" We gotta de-ideologize, free ourselves from the poisonous rhetoric of Babylon. Chant down de Babylon! Itate de Babylon downpression outta mind!

Besides, when's the last time a black man with dreads down to the middle of his back able to rock out with a crowd of children without desperate white mothers rushing in to grab their children, admonishing them not to associate with "THOSE PEOPLE"?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cp-6g_CdpJs

Oh, and lest we forget, reggae can get a bit racey. But in the best kind of way.

So who loves reggae? What are your favorite bands? Roots, Reggaeton, Latin? Do you listen for the rhythms, or for the message of peace and social justice as well?

Reggae doesn't have to be Rastafarian. I mean it's cute and all, but when I think about Heavy Metal I don't think exclusively of Satanists or church burners. When I think of Hardcore Punk I don't think of just Straight Edge...

But eh, I'm not really a fan of Reggae, and tbh I've rarely met someone that just listens to the stuff without having to get high or something.

Well, you just did. And there are straight edge reggae artists around too, like Lucky Dube who unfortunately was murdered a year ago in South Africa.

I like reggae a lot, and have listened to it pretty much daily the last couple of years, since we adopted Ziggy. (Ziggy is a blue and gold macaw.) When we tried out different music for Ziggy after I brought him home, he reacted very positively to reggae - in fact, he danced about a month straight. It's why he ended up with the name Ziggy.

Ziggy loves the beat. I love the beat and the message. Sometimes, we crank it up, and Ziggy and I dance to it. (No drugs involved.)

Aww, that is so awesome! Do you have video? The mental image of blue and gold macaw jammin out to reggae is precious!

I just listened to some Ziggy. He really has been under-appreciated, growing up beneath the shadow of his father like he did. But he's a very accomplished reggae artist in his own right.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM8M-HHSbp0

I decided recently to expand my horizon beyond Jamaica and Africa. I'm really loving Chilean artists Gondwana and Argentian artists Los Pericos. I especially love their penchant for brass!

Gonna go dance now!

Reggae is nice. Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, they're all pretty good.

Ah, I remember when he was killed, that was a shame. The only reggae I can ever deal with is when it influences the likes of Nausea on Sacrifice.

Not to rain on your parade—I actually like reggae fairly well—but it's not all social justice and rainbows. Heard of "Boom Bye-Bye"?

This also put me off Reggae, though obv it's not so prevalent in the mainstream nowadays.

Unfortunately, no video. I'm too much of a Luddite.

Those first several months, he really went to town, sliding all the way along his perch, doing the Stevie Wonder head/neck weave. He was really excited by music - I don't think anyone had played music for him before.

These days, he's more inclined to bop to music, *snapping his fingers* in rythm. He has a great sense of rythm.

Banton did apologize for that one, though your point is well taken. There is also a bit of a misogynist strain in some reggae artist's works as well.

love da reggae music! all kinds.
my favorites include...besides the king Bob Marley...Gregory Isaacs, Jimmy Cliff, Alpha Blondy, Pato Bantan (not to be confused with Buju Bantan), the reggae-ish UB40, Peter Tosh, Black Uhuru, Inner Circle, Toots and the Maytals and more i can't think of right at the moment.
the unique beat, i mean riddim, pulls me in first and then when you hear the beautiful messages of peace and social justice, that just makes it all the sweeter.

Quote:

A bit?? Listen to just about any reggae song that's come out in the last 15 years, it's all about women's bodies, and drugs. Yeah, the beat is cool, but it's not about the 'one love' and social injustice messages any more and hasn't been for ages.

I think you are unfairly generalizing. Sure there is misogynism in the reggae ranks, just like their is misogyny in hip-hop, rock, techno and other genres. Doesn't mean we should write off the whole genre as hopelessly sexist, however.
