yes, the grammar police are on the loose

i'm sure i'm not the only one who gets annoyed when they run into improper grammar. therefore, i've decided to start this thread where we can vent about others' grammar. the thread is not meant to be an attack on anyone, it's simply a good-natured thread for those of us who are bothered by grammar errors. and by keeping it in one thread, it won't hijack other threads. see, it's brilliant!

anyway, since i came up with this magnificent idea, i would like to pose a few ground rules.

1. typos are okay, even if they aren't technically grammar mistakes!

2. by reading this thread, you accept that the posts below are not personal attacks, intended to offend, or intended to inflict pain on others.

3. posting your own grammar mistakes is encouraged and demonstrates good-naturedness.

so with this said, i would like to start off this thread with a recent favorite of mine. from everyone's favorite "that alpaca guy"..

Quote:

Originally posted by That Alpaca Guy

Life are expensive

i would like to disclaimer myself here.

i rarely puncuate correctly when on the computer. it is a method, a plot, if you will, to hypnotize you all.

i am the typo master! (as stonecrest well knows). and i am bloody proud of it.

i rarely, if ever, proofread my posts. and when i do, i make myself laugh because of all the typos. oh! how i laugh ! and then i laugh some more. perhaps a bit more after that.

i would also like to iterate that i have the full capability to write good. i mean, write well (ha) and incorrect grammar does bug me (more in direct verbal speech than on the internet or other writing).

in real life, i'm quite anal about these kind of things and call people out on their errors many a times.

you're (haha) turn.

i'm not sure if it a regional thing where i am or not but it drives me nuts when people say "i seen..." instead of "i saw." My bf is from a small town and i had to break him of that bad habit. (note: i do NOT capitalize when using the computer unless it is a professional email or something)

Grammar is an interesting thing. I find my grammar changes according to who I'm talking to (or typing to, online). Most times I try to post using proper grammar online but I am a devout user of the three dots (...) as a separator of thoughts ... so that's one of my little possible annoyances

I often forget to use question marks online (?) which I really must try to force myself to do (as the meaning of something can be altered so much )

as far as spelling is concerned I find the following are common mistakes .........

1 ... usage of these words "their, there, and they're"

2 ... the word effect and the word affect

Of course in a way, it would be nice for English to get a thorough revamping to get rid of useless historical debris such as the "ough" in thorough ... but that just aint gonna happen (hehe, sometimes slang is better )

i believe i'm an abuser of the trailing dots as well .. see! there i did it again! i think how i type - grammar, punctuation, spelling & all that adds a sort of inflection to what i'm typing, in an attempt to make up for what inflection is lost by not actually saying it orally. oh boy .. this just makes me wish i had taken more linguistics classes! *g*

for the life of me i cannot sort out the difference between effect and affect. I can look it up and have it figured out for a while, but not long after i forget and have to look it up again.

oh yes the dots...

the dots.... (these dots? yes, these dots).

the dots are never endangered nor threatened in any of my posts.

'affect' and 'effect' are little bastards and that's what it comes down to, in the end.

i am abuse the dots horribly...... At times I abuse the comma as well. english is one of my majors, but when online i hardly pay any attention to capitalization or spelling or proper grammar heh. also, canadians get a lot of flack for saying eh, i say it all the time, but im not really canadian.

as for real life, when people say ruff for the word roof,,it bugs the hell out of me.

oh yeah..and 'woof' for 'wolf.' it's not that difficult to pronounce.

the words i some how manage to let out oddly are 'golf' which comes out as 'gulf' at times, and 'bag' which lets loose as 'beg' at my most horrid moments.

Grammar doesn't annoy me that much. It's bad spelling that makes me mad... Every time I see someone spell something wrong I'm like, "Ahh! Noooooooooooo..."

I completely abuse the dots! Almost all of my sentences end dots or an exclamation point. Periods are just so... boring! I don't capitalize much either... Well i do sometimes... And I used "the dots" five times in this post!

The three (3) dots are called an ellipsis. They are used to indicate something omitted, as in:

Quote:

I use them to mean "this is the end of a sentence which i'm not excited enough to use an exclamation point, and one period is too boring, so i'll end it with three periods!"
