So on September 9th our house was destroyed by a flood. We lived a block from the susquhanna, unprotected by the levee system and the river crested at a record breaking 42.8ft.
We were told the night before we were fine the water wouldnt reach us. It had never reached us before, our house had been there through many floods and the water never came near it. We felt bad for the people right on the river but they got evacuated early. The next day we woke up to the national gaurd. The river was rising 6 inches ever 20 minutes and it was on our neighbors yard. They told us the basement would get flooded. We moved everything up to the first floor. Then a half an hour later they told us it would hit our first floor. Wow Im actually crying while I type this. It was so friggen scary. We threw what we could on the second floor and packed the car. We were headed for a state park yurt way away from the flood. We figured it would never really hit the first floor and we would be home monday.
We got a few feet on the first floor. The mold spread like a fire. It rained for about 2 weeks afterwards making any attempt at clean up impossible. Everything on the first floor was lost and most 2nd floor stuff got moldy. The roof caved in.
We lived at 2 different state parks for a month and then we were approved by FEMA for a hotel room. Our whole town was there. It was horrible. Thankfully we found a new house and we moved on October 19th. We got our internet back today.
I dont even know what to say. Our old town still has no power. I just painted that FRIGGIN dining room.

I heard from someone on the forums that you were caught in the flood. So sorry that you had to go through all that. I'm glad you and your family made it through relatively safely though, and that you've got a new place now!

Ditto The important thing is that you and your family are safe, together, and you have a new home. And we're glad you're back on VB! :hugs:

Wow oh wow. And your dining room was beautiful! But I'm glad you're in a new house and everyone is ok. That had to be rough on the kids.

I hope you all can get back on your feet soon- I have been following your story- and am amazed at your positive attitude and stamina- especially with those three kids of yours! You are a strong woman, and I have faith that things will start looking up for you- you all deserve it!

I'm so sorry to hear that! Good luck in rebuilding! If you need anymore help, see if you can get into contact with a group called Lend-A-Hand. They are currently helping my mother rebuild, for free.

My mother's house was almost completely destroyed in the same flood--only from the Swatara in Middletown. She had close to 5 feet in the first floor. The house was also flooded in 1972 by Agnes. We got over a foot of rain in a day from Tropical Storm Lee--devastating for this area. We didn't expect the creek to overflow, either. We ended up wading through a few feet of water to get to the house (it is horrible to do, but is a must when needing to save personal property). Fortunately, the house is still standing. The same cannot be said about several neighbors. Nor many other people in the area that have been affected.

Again, very sorry to hear this and my heart goes out to you and your family. Best of luck.

I thought with a flood, you're supposed to rip out the wall covering up to the flood level, to dry things out, replace electrical wiring, replace insulation, etc.

It sounds like something I'd rather never go through.

Technically, you're right das.

I meant it as inspirational, like there will be more walls in life to paint and enjoy.
