It was supposed to be "New and Improved". The only new stuff they brought this year is the 5 tigers and 2 bears kept in tiny cages kept right in the midway. They even have a sign up, "Only $10 to have your picture taken with a <b>BABY TIGER!</b>"<br><br>
How sick.

You contributed by paying to get in. Maybe next year don't go. The thought behind this is if no one goes (fat chance) they won't keep animals all caged up like this because they won't have a reason to.

No, I didn't contribute. You don't have to pay to get INTO our fair, you have to pay if you want to ride on the rides. I just went for the battle of the bands (run by my town, not the fair- and it was free to get into, anyway).<br><br>
I didn't ride on any of the rides or purchase anything from any of the venders, therefore I didn't contribute anything.

Ooooo, I wish our local exotic cat rescue place could rescue those tigers.<br><br><br><br>
I got to *play* with baby tigers. They were so sweet! And I had the satisfaction of knowing they would never be in a circus or zoo.

I hate fairs....won't go to them because I feel that by being there I'm giving to it's success and helping it live. They always seem to have some mistreated animal there; using it to turn a dirty dollar. I hope someday to live where I won't see animals carted around like slaves! It's very sad and these people doing it to the animals should be ashamed. It's good that you didn't spend any money there though.

I had my pic taken with a baby tiger because it was for a tiger rescue place here, so I didn't feel bad about it. But I don't want to take my daughter to any "regular" circus when she gets older. But I will take her to the zoo. I go there to pray for the animals and regard their beauty, so I hope she understands. I know zoos are horrible places too, but I find some comfort in praying for their well being. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/smiley.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":)">

Year before last, at the Western Idaho Fair, they had a mucky tank full of dirty water in which they kept sharks as part of an "educational" show. At that time, I was still a meat eater, and I wasn't particularly interested in any AR causes. But I still found the tank to be horribly cruel.<br><br><br><br>
Bottom line, there are always animals being mistreated at the fair, be it at the 4H Livestock exhibits or some other shady, exploitive enterprise. I choose not to go now.

That's pretty sad. I like going to the fair, but thus far haven't seen any wild animals at any of our local fairs. That would be upsetting to see. Lots of farm animals though.

That fairs in Vermont just have demolition derbies and tractor pulls. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/grin.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":D">

Well, on the bright side of things, our parish fair got rid of their "win-a-goldfish" game this year! Yay!!<br><br><br><br>
I used to steal goldfish from there when I was little and set them loose in the local streams. I don't know if they lived or not..maybe they got eaten by a turtle soon after...but at least their lives were a bit happier than swimming around in a white bucket with hundreds of other little guys or living in a tiny bowl for the rest of their lives (typically, a week at the most, of course. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/sad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":("> )<br><br><br><br>

I went to a local carnival and of course they had the goldfish... it makes me so sad. I wanted to stand there and yell to everyone, "Goldfish need 10 gallons of water each! They live over 20 years! Only play if you really want one!"<br><br><br><br>
Worst part is, they had some big goldfish that you had to win 6 times to get. Some of them were actually nice fish! 6" comets, and one really pretty calico fantail... its body was orange and white, but its fins were black. They must have gotten them from somewhere that treats their fish fairly well. Do these places know who they're selling to?<br><br><br><br>
But other than that, the only cruelty to animals I saw was people bringing their dogs. They always look unhappy being dragged on a leash through crowds of people on a hot sunny day.

I know my dog would be in heaven if I brought him to the fair. He loves people and has endless energy and enthusiasm, so, as long as we brought his water bowl (which we do whenever we take him out), I'm sure he'd be happy for as long as he was there. But our parish festival doesn't allow dogs--it's kind of small and crowded so it wouldn't really work. The only pfestival I'v ever known that allows dogs is the one from the second "Beehtoven"(hope i spelled it right) movie. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/smiley.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":)"> Most of the festivals around here are too small and crowded for dogs.<br><br><br><br>

Maybe the ALF should hit some of these fairs. Of course, all the clueless families would be outraged! "Who could do such a thing?" LOL. "You might ask yourselves the same question, folks."
