Did anyone else see this movie?

I'm not sure whether to wish I hadn't or be thankful it only cost $4. I wasn't really sure what part of the story the movie was trying to focus on, if it had a focus. Was the point the grisly, pointless murder? Was it the effect the murder investigation had on the two cops? Was it all just a way to get the main character, a cop, in bed with his partner's girlfriend?

The gory scenes are unfortunately still with me. *shudders* Though I live in a small, safe city, I felt paranoid walking out of the theater to my car.

And what was with the amount of smoking the characters did? Ok, it's trying to recreate a time period, but it seemed like every time a character opened his or her mouth to talk, s/he had to first stick a cigarette in it.

I saw this...day before yesterday I think.

I actually quite liked it even though I was expecting not to. For the first fifteen/twenty minutes I was pretty bored, but some of the lines were so funny even though it was a pretty grusome film about a tragic event. I had to look away at a lot of the gory bits though.

I think the smoking was to show of what a lot of people did in the 40's. My mom told me growing up everybody smoked, she's 65. I am intrested in the case but won't see the movie the autopsy photos in real life were bad really bad can't imagine how it would look in color on a huge screen in the theatre.

If you're still up to it, read James Ellroy's book instead (the source of the movie). He does a great job of establishing a seedy, violent atmosphere. The film can't capture that, especially with Josh Hartnett and Scarlett Johanson in the leads. They look like kids who got lost from another movie production.

I want to see this movie so bad. I love gore. I've watched some things on the Black Dahlia Murder (plus I LOVE the band I'll also have to check out the book.
