The Bill Gates-backed veggie burger that 'bleeds' is going into grocery meat cases

Beyond Meat, a plant-based "meat" startup backed by Bill Gates, is taking its hallmark veggie burger to the mainstream with an expansion into Safeway.

Bloomberg reports that the Beyond Burger, as the product is known, will arrive in the meat cases - rather than the frozen food aisle, where meat-lovers might glance over it - at more than 280 supermarket locations in California, Hawaii and Nevada.

The burger, made from pea protein, yeast extract, and coconut oil, had previously been available at Whole Foods and select restaurants on the West Coast. The move into a conventional grocery chain could help the company capture a wider audience.

"It's a really important step in terms of reframing how we think about meat," Ethan Brown, founder and CEO of Beyond Meat told Bloomberg. "We assume that an animal has to be used for meat, and that's just false."

Most veggie burgers found in the frozen food aisle taste more like chopped black beans and corn than real beef. Founded in 2009, Beyond Meat promises products that taste and look more like the real thing. The burgers contain pulverized beets, which gives them their reddish color and juices so that they "bleed" and sizzle in the pan.

I'm so curious about this! Has anyone tried it?

I tried it once. I thought it was OK. Not a fan of the after taste, but I'm pretty sure that was more the pea protein that Beyond Meat uses in their products than anything specific to that burger since I had the same after taste after trying their chick'n.

Good ol' soy protein would taste better, but the poorly-informed public is mistakenly convinced that soy will give them man-boobs and breast cancer. Gluten is out of vogue, also. Pea protein is the next least expensive option.

These just came to my town. I don't really shop where they are but plan to try them. I did not like the last beyond beef burger that came out. I guess it was the beast burger. It seemed too chemical tasting but I do plan to try this one.
My current favorite is Field roast so it will have to be better than that. I will report back when I try them.

I've not yet found a store bought burger replacement of any variety to taste all that good without loading it down with a lot of condiments, tomato, onion, greens of some variety and many spices. I tend to appreciate the flavors of the "burger" itself without needing to add a ton of stuff to it once it's made to enhance, or cover up, the flavors.

Also, Mr. Gates doesn't impress me much from afar as someone who really cares about healthily nurturing others and saving the animals, or else we would have long since heard of his doings in those arenas, but that's just my personal take on things. I'm sure many feel differently, and that's okay. Is he an active vegan himself or is this just another potential business opportunity?

As someone already mentioned above, most of the vegan burger options I've tried had a highly processed chemical-like flair to them that I can't hang with. I also have no desire to try something that appears to be bleeding. Gross. Knowing it's from beets doesn't help the visual in my mind, at all. To me, it feels like more of a party trick than it does a good idea. But if the appearance of blood thrills others so much, have at it.

Several I tried also contained gluten, which I didn't think to look for at the time of being so excited to know a vegan option was available, but later paid dearly for it, as I try to avoid gluten due to the major inflammation and brain fog it presents my biology with.

I don't remember all the varieties/name brands I've tried between the grocery stores and the few restaurants and cafes that offer them, but yuck. If I were stuck somewhere with no other option available, I may very well partake, but otherwise, making my own burgers at home with beans or mushrooms remains the tastiest and cleanest versions (for my particular tastes and preferences) by far. Thanks, but no thanks, Bill.

I finally got around to trying these. I live in a rural area, without many shopping options, so I ordered online from VeganEssentials. It was $7.29 +shipping for a package of two 1/4-lb burgers. That's pretty expensive. I've tried Beyond Meat's other burger choices and wasn't too impressed. These are much better. Beyond Burger has something the others lack, and that is, a certain tenderness. It's sort of the difference between eating a cut of steak and eating rump roast. The packaging says, it will spoil, and recommends keeping it frozen, and then using it within 3-days of thawing. No, it's not exactly like real meat, but it's closer by far than any other substitute I've tried. There was a certain primal satisfaction in having it.

I think it tastes good for a veggie burger. Veggie burgers aren't my favorite when it comes to meat substitutes.
It tastes ok. I prefer lentil based vegan burgers though.
They sell those in grocery stores near where I live. The one from the supermarket, I baked it and then put it on a bun and ate it just like that. I admire the way they designed this product, but didn't care too much for the weird smoky aftertaste.

However, this afternoon I went to a local vegan chain restaurant, Veggie Grill, and they were serving Beyond Meat 'cheese' burgers. This burger was one of the most tastiest things I've ever eaten. They really cooked it just right with all the right sauces and seasonings, and this time the aftertaste was perfect, almost like regular beef.

Good stuff.
