Does anyone else really empathize with the 'Lisa the Vegetarian' episode from The Simpsons? For an episode of The Simpsons (one of my favourite shows in its prime), it's actually quite a depressing one as it's very close to home. The fact Lisa is a hopleless minority and that everyone around her has no conscience regarding the meat industry. So many people just simply ignore how their precious hamburger ended up there.<br><br><br><br>
So anyone else seen this episode? Thoughts? Although it isn't funny in principle, the satirical glossing of meat production is amusing.

Well the Simpson family go to this amusement park for Maggie, and at one point they are petting the farm animals, with Lisa endeared to an adorable lamb. That night they ironically have lamb chops for dinner, and Lisa is haunted by the face of the lamb from the park, so she vows to become vegetarian. This obviously doesn't go down too well with Homer & Bart who find it hard to accept her vegetarianism. Everyone in town, from the adults to the schoolchildren either ignore or tease her for her ways. She deliberately trashes Homer's BBQ, before running away desparingly.<br><br><br><br>
I won't ruin the ending for you though, but that's the gist of it.

I think it's great when shows can include vegetarians. Sad that it's true for many of us that others just don't understand, eh? Do you think the episode could click something in omnis?

I think it would definitely be one means of people switching to vegetarianism. Although I'm afraid just too many don't want to know. Apparently, Paul McCartney -- who guest stars in this episode -- made a condition that he'd only do the episode if Lisa remains a veggie thereafter.<br><br><br><br>
EDIT: Also, the member here 'Amy SF', her profile title is 'Going to marry a carrot' which is a joke made by one of the purple-haired twins towards Lisa in the episode.

That episode also contains a reference to the tension between lacto-ovo vegetarians and vegans.<br><br><br><br>
And true to the deal, Lisa has remained a vegetarian. It's mentioned occasionally, though not often, and frequently not in a very flattering way. I recall that in one later episode, Marge confesses to a houseguest that she always slips meat juice into Lisa's vegetables to "keep her healthy."

I liked Homer and Bart's "you don't make friends with salad" dance. Like Tess, though, what struck me the most was the conversation between Apu and Lisa about tolerances between vegetarians and vegans.

I happen to know that there are threads about the Lisa the Vegetarian episode in the Entertainment Forum:<br><br><br><br><a href="http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=48951" target="_blank">http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/s...ad.php?t=48951</a><br><br><br><br><a href="http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=44493" target="_blank">http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/s...ad.php?t=44493</a><br><br><br><br><a href="http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=31653" target="_blank">http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/s...ad.php?t=31653</a><br><br><br><br>
and probably mentions of the episode in other Ent. Forum threads. Enjoy!

What we learn from the episode is that vegans think vegetarians are monsters (per Apu's comment) <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/grin.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":D">

I love that episode. Except where the meat industry brainwashes the kids with the slaughterhouse video and then gives them all free tripe.<br><br><br><br>
I mean...<i>tripe.</i>

The writers need to<br><br><br><br>

We could have had a family that grew up with us, but instead we have the same jokes being redone with the same characters that seemingly never age.

I think the never aging thing is part of the charm of cartoons like that.<br><br>
We do get to see grown up Bart, Lisa and Maggie in a bunch of flashforward to the future/dreamsequence episodes.
