I have a tremendous amount of respect for him...he gave up a huge family fortune in the name of animal welfare and good health. Grab his book "The Food Revolution" from Amazon. It's a must read (in my humble opinion!).

Indeed, but I think it took a great strength of character to turn all that down as a young adult!

I don't know how hard it would be to turn down a multi million dollar inheritance for a multi million dollar book deal.

It's my understanding that the book deal came years after turning down the family fortune. He lived in relative obscurity and self-imposed poverty for years with his wife before writing his first book. And, as successful as his books have been, I still think the ice cream fortune would have been a bit more lucrative...

He has a new book out now called 'Healthy at 100', and I would recommend that one too! Its a very inspiring book about what we can learn from some of the healthiest and longest living peoples in the world.

I read 'The Food Revolution' over about 4 days travelling through America. I started the book a hardcore meateater and half way through I just stopped eating meat altogether. I have never really missed it, although I do miss fish sometimes, and a year on I have cut out eggs and dairy. I feel so much happier and healthier, and I can honestly say that it is down to John Robbins and this amazing book. I still read it now for a little boost now and then when I fancy a really stinky cheese.

John Robbins=LEGEND!

I agree griggsy. I ate my last bit of meat while reading the second section of his book and was a veggie by the last page.

I did a bit more research after my last post. He gave up the family fortune (and royally pissed off his family in the process) in his early-twenties and his first book (Diet For A New America) wasn't published until he was 40 years old. That man talks the talk AND walks the walk. Not much to criticize when looking at how he lives his life (in my humble opinion).
