^^^ I've only used Bob's Red Mill because that's what is available at my store and the price is good, but I'd be interested in hearing about other brands as well.

that's what our co op supplies also. It's very good in chili, from theHappy Herbivore cookbook. My hubby is requesting I make that one again. He liked the flavor of it with theTVP in it.

These are my two favorite recipes for taco filling:

2. Tijuana Taco Filling (serves 6)

1.5 C TVP
1 C water
3 T olive oil
3/4 C chopped onion
4-5 cloves garlic, minced
1T ground cumin
1.5 t ground coriander
big pinch of crushed red chilies
3 T soy sauce

In a ssaucepan bring tvp and water to boil, turn off heat and cover.

In a saute pan heat olive oil and add onion and garlic and cook until lightly browned (4 to 5 minutes). Add cumin, coriander and crushed red chilies. Add tvp and soy sauce and stir well.

thats funny that you mentioned this......I have been a veg for 22 years and never tried it.....well my sweetie (an omni who loves to cook and eat veg) and I were walking round Whole Foods and found this same thing the Bobs Red Mill TVP and my Sweetie Says that he has a taco recipe that he wants to try with this.....we havent yet......but with all the awesome tips on here it sure is gonna be a great meal....thankies everyone

I asked Jill Nussinow a vegan RD what her opinion on TVP was on FB last night, and this is her response:

"TVP, as far as I know is a highly processed soyfood. It's a step up frrom isolated soy protein. I don't recommend it regularly but there may be other people who know more than I do about it. I eat mostly whole soy foods such as tempeh and tofu, in moderation. I have 1 recipe that uses TVP for a veggie burger but I rarely make it anymore. Anyone else know?"

I just wanted to share, because that was my understanding too....in case anyone is concerned about consuming excess processed soy foods. I pretty much stick to tempeh and soy milk also.

sally....I agree, my hubby likes the tvp occasionally in chili...more in the winter I guess...makes it hearty

While I do agree that TVP is a highly processed product it still has but one ingredient, defatted soy flour, and I don't consider it to be any more deleterious to health than other processed flours that we eat everyday. Lots of veg*ns eat commercial products that contain many more processed ingredients than TVP not to mention a huge amount of sodium. I'd much rather see veg*ns prepare their own food from defatted soy flour, which is a low sodium food, than scarfing down Boca burgers and the like. I also appreciate that TVP is made as a byproduct of soybean oil manufacturing, and that in doing so there is no waste. It's environmentally sound.

i agree Digger....her point is that it is so processed that it's just above soy protein isolates, which those bocca burgers are made of....I only mentioned it because I too had questioned how healthy it is to eat awhile ago, and then there are always questions regarding "how much soy should I eat" that pop up...to each there own to make their own informed decisions, that's all!

Textured vegetable protein is a soy protein-rich product that is made of powdered soy protein products as the main raw material and has a lean tissue structure similar to that of lean meat.
This is a soy protein supplier I recently found and found it to be very good, whether it is TVP or ISP, the product quality is high, the price is low, and I recommend it to everyone。
