I want to try Tempeh and Sietan and I am going to get groceries tomorrow. Where do I find them? In what section of the grocery store. are they refridgerated or on the shelf? I am a complete novice on these products and I am anxious to give them a shot!

They are both refrigerated and in all the stores in my area, they're grouped with the other meat substitues & vegetarian items in a refrigerated case.

The only place I find seiten already made is the health food store, or Whole Foods........i think its white wave brand?<br><br>
anyway, seitan is easy and cheap to make yourself. i will find a link to a recipe for you.

I get Grilled seitan at a nearby health food store called Mothers. After reading this thread, I was inspired to eat a piece of it. Cold, straight from the fridge. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/drool.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":drool:"><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/drool.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":drool:">

Mmm! I make it all homemade and it's so good! It's way better then most "veggie meat substitutes" you find at the market. I love it dearly.<br><br><br><br><br><br>

Over here you can really only get it at some asian grocery stores, I prefer the homemade one, although I don't really like seitan at all I don't think.

i usually make my own seitan. the local sav-a-center and rousse's market both have organic sections and there are boxes of 'vital wheat gluten' so i try to make it at least once every couple weeks.<br><br><br><br>
there is also a whole food store (like the chain) about 30 minutes from my house so i try to go there at least once a month and sometimes buy tempeh and premade seitan. i am not much for tofu but i love me some tempeh and seitan <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/blush.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":eek:"><br><br><br><br>
now i am hungry and do not get off work for another hour <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/sad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":("><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/sad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":("><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/sad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":(">

I've never tried seitan. The only place I've seen it as at Whole Foods. Tempeh is at all the grocery stores around here, in the refridgerated "fake meat" section, right next to the tofu.<br><br><br><br>

I found tempeh in the freezer of my HFS today! i am so excited. I've no idea how to defrost--I assume over night in the fridge. Any ideas on preparing the tempeh? I've seen recipes for seitan but not tempeh. I hear it makes a good bacon.

Welcome to the world of tempeh eaters, SpiderGirl. There are a million things you can do with it--put it in pasta sauce, steam it and make sandwiches, marinate it and then brown it in a frying pan, make stuffed baked potatoes, put it in stir fry... I would recommend finding a good cookbook (I can recommend a couple but I'm new here and I'm not sure if that is okay) and using that too.<br><br>
Basically, most things that you (used to) do with chicken can be done with tempeh, in my experience.<br><br>
And, just to reinforce something that has been alluded to already on this thread, making your own seitan is MUCH more economical than buying the stuff in the store and the result is just as good.

Can I just marinade and bake like I would tofu? I was afraid you had to deal with it differently than tofu. If you can cook it like tofu then I know what to do.

Both tempeh and seitan are firm and "cooked" already; basically, you are just warming them when you cook them. So baking probably would not do much except dry them out. Marinade is good though - just toss the marinated peices into a pan for stir-fry or into a stovetop sauce.
