Hey everyone, My name is Tigger. I'm 13 and I've been a vegetarian since 3rd grade. I wanted to make some friends and share experiences about being a teen vegetarian. I'll share mine first.

I was in french class in 6th grade, my first year at my new school. We were talking about all these different kinds of meat in french and I was getting pretty grossed out. So I asked the teacher how to say "I don't eat meat" suddenly there was dead quiet in the room and then everybody started asking "you don't eat meat?" "So all you ever eat is vegetables?" It was awful. Now, after 3 years at my school everybody is cool about it and nobody makes weird comments. In fact, one girl even converted after I talked to her about it for a while. But my friend still has a nick name for me. I will always be her "vegetable".

Don't be shy now, share your own funny or sad stories!

I was a teen vegetarian . As a matter of fact, I still am if you consider 19 to be 'teenage'.

A distinct memory of mine is a girl having a presentation about vegetarianism in biology class. She was either very brave or very foolish in my opinion. The kids in that class just went on and on saying things like "Nice arguments, but meat tastes sooooooooo good".

I have some more stories but I need to get them sorted out before I post.

*shudder* biology... Not too long ago we were talking about the energy pyramid and it's more effective to eat veggies than meat because you get more energy... but that's not my story.

I have a friend who's like reallyagainst vegetarianism or something because her older sister just turned veggie last summer and I guess it bothers her that her sister won't conform... something along those lines. Anyways I went out to lunch with a bunch of people, including her, and since the only thing veggie was a veggie burger on the menu I ordered it and was bombarded with questions about what I do/don't eat (I hate that)... And to make it worse my friend started talking about India. How they have all those 'beautiful cows' and also many starving people, 'I say we make them start eating meat, there problem solved'. I was furious... but I'm passive agressive so I didn't say anything... I might have made a sarcastic comment but I can't remember, too long ago. Yeah so that's my story.

I started my journey aged 11. That was when BSE mania hit Britain. I refused to eat beef. A year later, at 12 years old, I decided to become a vegetarian.

I kinda stayed in the closet about it. I was never open about being veggie. However, I'm more comfortable now with openly being vegetarian.

I guess I still am a teenage vegetarian, since I'm 18, but in regards to vegetarianism, I've come a long way these past six years.

I became veg when I was 13. Actually I still am 13! But it was back in january that I stopped eating meat, so it's been almost 5 months now.

I only know one other veg*n, and one fake veggie(eats gelatin/carmine/etc.) So it would be kinda lonely without veggieboards!

This one time I told my class I was a vegetarian and theyre all like "whoa! really?" and "you only eat vegetables?" Then they all started talking about sausages... That was kinda weird...

Stories? Hmm... well, I'm 18 and when my 1 year veggie anniversary was on this past Feb 7 (don't ask why I remember the exact date). I was pretty proud of myself, so I told my friends (none of whom are veggie themselves, but they don't make fun of me for it)that I'd not had a bite of meat for a year, and one girl who I'd class more as an acquaintance narrowed her eyes and said "*that's* not very long" in a very derisive tone.

It pissed me off, but it wasn't worth the conflict to say anything.

Hmmm... I tried several times when I was 12 and 13, but I was given the impression that I could only eat salad. Then when I was 14, I met some vegans who introduced me to a more varied diet... though I only became a vegetarian. I gained alot of weight this period because I was a huge cheese-addict and not very active.

Then, I was a vegetarian until the beginning of this year when I was inspired to become a vegan at 22 going 23, and I've been vegan since.

When I became a veggie every one of my friends though I would die as some emaciated, pale little shriveled kid. They were always saying "shes probably gonna die". And my family didn't understand at all because I'm Italian and were supposed to be ravenous carnivores or something...Well, ya know what? I'm probably the most healthy of them all...losers...lol...Right sprout?

I'm 16 and a newbie to the whole vegetarian thing...not even 3 months, but i still have stories. I get teased with people saying stuff like, " Hey Kara, I'm gonna go home and have a nice ham sandwich made from cute little pigs" or "Mmmmmm this hamburger made from DEAD C0W tastes sooooo yummy!" I just kindof look away. And my best friend didn't really like my whole being a vegetarian at first, but the other day at a cook out she ate a veggie burger with me, and admitted that although she may hate me for it, she might become a vegetarian sometime in the future. cool, huh?

I went veggie at 19, but that was quite a while ago, when it was hard to find anything veggie to eat but salad and a grilled cheese, or peanut butter sandwiches. It depends on where you're located, but for me living in mid Michigan, it was really hard. I had about 7 things I could eat. After 4 years, I met my husband who was a big meat eater, and eventually started eating meat again.

We moved to NYC 8 years ago, and last year we both cut out meat from our diet as well as refined carbs (white flour, white rice, sugar) and we feel great. (if you haven't read "Fast Food Nation", read it. That will help you over the fence if you're having problems quitting meat!)

Now it's much, MUCH easier to go veg. Almost so easy that no one has an excuse not to quit meat!

hi,

I'm 14 right now. I turned veggie like, on my 13 th birthday .

Actually I haven't had any negetive veggie/omni. stories to tell. Well that is if you don't count one boy telling Me that I only ate lettuce, I laughed my head off, hope i din't offend him, oh well. Recently in HE class I found that someone in my class used to be veggie. she hardly eats any now. That was nice. my friends think my veggieism is cool. I live near Edmonton

I became a vegan on my 15th birthday. I kinda hid it for awhile from everyone because i didn't want to seem like some kinda freak or weirdo to my friends. But then i suddenly realized i was proud of my self for my decision and came outta the "closet". Well things went really bad when i did. I was ostracized by alot of my friends , two of which i had been friends with since the first grade. To this day, when i run into them they barely acknowledge my presence. But oh well , fours years later and i couldn't imagine myself not being a vegan.

These people don't sound much like friends if they completely ignored you just because you went vegan. I really don't see the point of what they did, even if they love meat, and that so shallow and stupid to get rid of a lifelong friend because they don't eat animal products.

i am almost 19 and i have been vegan since i was 16, i grew up in cambridge, New Zealand and it was a farming community and lots of people who ate meat i grew up in a family who basically incouraged me to eat meat the word vegan or vegetarian for that matter wasn't even mentioned in out house and i didn't even know what vegan was till i turned 16. i was always an outcast at school i was always different to the majority of the kids there so i started going to punk shows in hamilton to try and make friends and i found them lots of them and one friend inparticular introduced me to veganism and i thought to myself that was logical so i decided to turn vegetarian for a start then an hour later i decided to go vegan so i just think it is normal because i only hangout with the vegans well they are my better friends. we have regular vegan dinners so that helped me to get to know the vegan community better. at this time i was still attending cambridge highschool, the response to me being vegan was what the hell is vegan, most of the kids at school accepted it but there was those few immature kids who decided that it was funny to hassle me this included a couple of kids holding me down trying to force me to eat meat. a yea and a half later i left school and got a job at an organic store in hamilton at this time i was helping out with HARD (hamilton animal rights defense) ths lasted for bout half a year till people left to move to different cities with better animal rights groups. and now me and a few friends got together and started it up again. i quit my job and went on the unemployment benefit and i am doing animal rights full time, we are currently doing a fur campaign. i don't regret making this decision and i am glad i met the friends i did otherwise i would be still ignorent and yea sorry i rattled of lots i tend to do that.
