Hi All,<br><br><br><br>
I was at food locker yesterday and I found a pair of shoes that said "synthetic upper". I assumed this meant that there was no leather in it, but the salesman told me that it was indeed leather.<br><br><br><br>
I smelled the shoe and it definitely didn't smell like leather but the texture was hard to judge.<br><br><br><br>
I've tried to google "synthetic upper" but I didn't find any good info. What do you guys say?<br><br><br><br>
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure 'synthetic upper' means the upper is not leather. The salesman could have meant that there was leather elsewhere on the shoe, or he could have been lying to give the appearence of 'quality'.<br><br><br><br>
However, I THINK that some cheap reconstituted leather have to be labelled 'synthetic'. Perhaps it was this stuff?

Look for shoes that say "all man made materials". I'm pretty sure synthetic has to mean man made, though... Maybe he meant somewhere else in the shoe? That's wierd.

synthetic means man made, hence not leather. i think the salesman was perhaps fibbing, unless part of the trim or lining that wasn't very obvious to you, was made of leather or suede.<br><br><br><br>
a tip i'd like to offer, is to learn, and look for the symbols for the different materials, they should be on the label, or on a sticker- sometimes on the sole, sometimes on the box. the symbols will tell you what different the shoes are made of. see them here (a bit down the page):<br><br><br><br><a href="http://www.barratts.co.uk/f/help/Help_and_FAQ.html" target="_blank">http://www.barratts.co.uk/f/help/Help_and_FAQ.html</a><br><br><br><br>
at the bottom of the page i've linked to, is an example of the different symbols, to help you out. when you look for the tag or sticker on a shoe/shoebox, there will be symbols for the upper, sometimes for the lining, and for the sole.<br><br><br><br>
look out, because sometimes a shoe upper is made of two or more materials (eg: trainers might have fabric panels with leather strips joining them) so there will be two symbols showing next to the word 'upper' on the sticker or tag then. leather soles are pretty rare on regular priced average shoe-store shoes, but its best to check incase.<br><br><br><br>
the one you want to avoid is the symbol that looks like a skin rug (the sheepskin or 'dead zebra on a hunters floor' style rug shape). i personally think that it'd be ok to wear a shoe containing any of the other ones, because it'd be very impractical to try and find out if the plastic/rubber based sole (etc) contained any kind of animal products, on every shoe you came across.

Well, after reading the posts and returning to the store, i'm pretty sure the salesman didn't know what he was talking about.<br><br><br><br>
I ended up buying a pair of new balance mesh shoes which were "all man made materials", along with a new pair of Dunham waterproof snow boots which were also 100% man made. Perfect timing too, as it snowed quite a bit this morning in NYC.<br><br><br><br>
Thanks you all for your responses!<br><br><br><br><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/hi.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":hi:">

I'd be surprised if a shoe told you about having a synthetic upper but had leather elsewhere on the shoe and didn't tell you about it. Usually if leather/suede is anywhere on the shoe it is on the upper, leather insoles are usually only in mens dress shoes, and its obvious when they're there. Its possible that he was lying to try to persuade you to buy them, its a lot more common for people to want leather shoes than synthetic. If it tells you that its synthetic I'd be amazed if it wasn't, it isn't something shoes usually brag about. (Except for those vegan vans which are like "Look at us YAY!")
