Hi guys,

Health question - I have a swollen gland on the left side of my neck. I first noticed it on Monday, so I've had it five days now. It hasn't changed in shape or anything. I don't have any other symptoms - maybe felt a bit fluish and had a wee sore throat in the mornings for the past few days, but generally feel okay.

Being a hypochondriac, my online research has led me to be paranoid that I have cancer. But friends tell me that swollen glands are no big deal - should I be worried? Anyone feel like calming me down a bit? Eek.

Generally speaking, swollen glands are not a problem. Definitely could be the result of a virus or something similar. Of course, if it doesn't go away, whether or not you begin to feel better, you should see a doctor. My daughter had a problem with swollen glands for a while. Turned out to be a clogged salivary gland which needed to be either removed/unclogged, can't remember for sure, but I can find out. It was a very minor procedure and caused her no problems whatsoever. She's had it done twice now. See how you feel after a few more days then have it checked out.

Get it checked out. First thing I thought of was when I was younger and had a bout of Mono. Was not fun once it really hit. Probably nothing major, but why wait to find out?

It's always good to do some catastrophyzing!!!

No, most of the time it's an enlarged lymph node as this is one of the defence mechanism of the body against intruders like viruses, bacteria, or other.

If it's still enlarged after the weekend, best would be seeing your GP, who might get you out of the paranoid circle of thought.
