I mentioned it to my fiance when I found out about it. I didn't even know there was a such day, but when I heard about it I figured it's a good excuse to do something fun.

We do a lot of fun and spotaneous things, so sometimes it's difficult to come up with special stuff for Valentine's Day, let alone this "sweetest day" now.
Like we had a special weekend last week as a celebration for putting a lot of hard work into our exams, and last night we had a Halloween-ish night.

Any ideas, people?

So I guess I should buy myself some flowers and take myself out on a date? Or I could take my cats out to dinner. They are my sweeties. I'll buy them meat in the shape of flowers.

Some orchestras have Sweetest Day concerts. Hey, whatever it takes to get a little Brahms and Mozart into ya.

Sweetest Day goes back before Hallmark if I'm not mistaken?

That said, I won't actually be with my sweetie on October 21,
so I'll have to settle for a long, mushy phone call..... or somethin'....

It does go back before Hallmark. It was thought up by a group of candy makers as a way to sell more candy. I'd never heard of it before I moved to Michigan.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweetest_Day yep I'm right.
Well, sort of. From that page:

Quote:
The origin of Sweetest day is frequently attributed to candy company employee Herbert Birch Kingston as an act of philanthropy.[4] However Bill Lubinger, a reporter for The Cleveland Plain Dealer, contends that "...Cleveland's top candy makers concocted the promotion 84 years ago and it stuck, although it never became as widely accepted as hoped."[5] This claim is based on the The Cleveland Plain Dealer October 8, 1921 edition, which chronicles the first Sweetest Day in Cleveland. According to the newspaper it was planned by a committee of 12 confectioners, who distributed 19,500 boxes of candy to newsboys, homeless people, orphans, and others who had fallen on hard times in Cleveland, Ohio[6].
Regardless, if people want another commercially sanctioned opportunity to show their love by buying stuff, more power to 'em.
