I've just realized that I want to avoid using the words ***** and ass as swear words because using the name of an animal as a derogatory term is degrading to the species itself, I find.

How do you VBers feel about this?

As I don't think animals understand our language, I don't worry about it.

I think for something to be demeaning, degrading, or derogatory, the object or the audience has to understand it to be so. Since animals don't know what we mean and since most people don't use the words to imply a relationship with animals, I don't think it does any harm.

If the word '*****' (which wasn't originally pejorative) is demeaning to animals, why isn't the word 'dog'? Isn't any word we use to name other species demeaning in that sense? All words are the same to animals, that is, it's all ugly noises that come from the gaping hole in the center of our weird-looking binocular faces.

If the connection isn't questionable, then I don't mind.

Also, my ass don't have any objections to be used as a derogatory word.

I don't swear because people that swear a lot sound illiterate, nothing to do with 'animal connotations'.

I try not to swear because it's distracting to people. They tend to focus on the swear words rather than the points I'm trying to make by using them.

I've never liked the B word. Same goes for sl*t and c*nt or the other words. Even during the time when I was in college taking women's studies courses and I thought we could reclaim the words, I noticed that too many people still use words in sexist ways. I think there times and places where it's OK, but in general they are not acceptable to me.

Ass doesn't bother me. When people use it they don't mean donkey they mean butt so I don't see it as speciesist. Same goes for ****. Things like cow or pig I'm on the fence about. I think that's more about fatphobia/ body shaming (mixed with sexism) than about speciesism.

There are, however, some phrases that I think are speciesist and I think they should be changed. For example "kill two birds with one stone" or "there's more than one way to skin a cat." Ugh! I heard alternatives: cut two carrots with one knife or there's more than one way to peel a mango.

When it comes to things like nursery rhymes I adlib. This little piggy shops at Whole Foods, this little piggly stays home. This little piggie eats tofu, this little piggy has none...

*shrugs* I don't really have a big problem with "cursing" over all, and when I hear those words in those contexts they don't make me think of animals. Animals are usually the last things on my mind when I hear the word "ass" or "*****".

I don't think it's demeaning to animals, and i don't mind swearing, i've been around it a lot, so unlike what Elainev thinks at least for me, i'm one person that wouldn't focus on the swear word because i really don't notice it, i'm always surprised now on regular tv channels when they blank out curse words, that's when i notice the curse word lol otherwise it would have just been normal to me.

I think the power of language is astonishing, and so if you are uncomfortable with animal context of those particular words, you should try not to use them. I don't use the word *****, as it carries such misogynistic connotations, which I have no desire to perpetuate. I take no issue with curse words, and I think that they can add strength, humour, and spice to the point one is trying to make. On the other hand, they can also take away from what one is saying. I don't use them, if I don't mean them, I guess.

Some other ideas... "Photograph 2 birds with one camera" or "More than one way to cuddle a cat".

I swear quite a lot I suppose but not in certain social situations where it would be inappropriate.

Here's a site that let's you "translate" curse words into acceptable English--sort of the "Babelfish" of cursing.

http://www.noswearing.com/index.php

I looked at their list of swear words and noticed "anus", "penis", and "vagina" were all listed as swear words. Seems a bit silly, since all three are the proper medical terms.

I agree that the words you listed are acceptable English and not swear words.

So I guess the site is not perfect.

I consider swear words acceptable English.

You are entitled to your opinion.

But the FCC disagrees. Most major newspapers disagree. And many English teachers make students that use swear words look up synonyms in a thesaurus that could be printed in the newspaper.

Lol except on cable they can pretty much say anything they want but don't want complaints so they stick to just using s*** for now.
