Ha. Good to know. I ordered sushi for the first time tonight and even though I KNOW the people at this restaurant know what I do and do not eat I got it home and thought "is that fish?" Didn't smell like it but I wasn't going to find out. Thanks!

Ginger is delicious! It's great on sushi or in between bites to cleanse your pallete, and supposedly it's great for digestion and also has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory propreties.

What I heard was that ginger was traditionally served with fish based sushi because it helps in case of food poisoning and eases an upset stomach, which would be useful I guess when eating raw possibly not properly refrigerated flesh.

But hey, with veggie sushi you get all of the health benefits with none of the grossness, that's just swell. Also, thanks to this thread I desperately want some avocado roll...

Well I will have to try it next time.

This time I went with a vegetable roll to see what I liked and what I didn't. Next time I will definitely get the avocado roll. That was the only thing I REALLY liked. Also learned that I do not care for Wasabi. Tried a little bit but almost choked on it and had to spit it out.

Yeah, wasabi is POWERFUL stuff, it gets right into your sinuses. I used to just avoid it because I'm sensitive to spicy things but now I've learned to appreciate putting a tiny little dab on each piece. My boyfriend is crazy for the stuff though, he spreads it on so thick I don't know how his head doesn't explode.

did you eat sushi with wasabi or the wasabi by itself? the latter would be pretty bad and would make me gag too

By itself, lol. I wanted to try it before I put it on the sushi. Bad idea. I love spicy stuff but this had a real horseradish taste that I didn't like at all.

Take a TINY pea or smaller size of it, mix it with soy sauce until it forms a paste, add in lemon juice if you want and dip the sushi in it, then lay a piece of ginger over it and pop the whole thing in your mouth. Give it a try.

I never knew what it was either and assumed it was fish. I'm glad you posted this. I'm not really a fan of sushi and hardly ever eat it but I've always wondered what that pink stuff was! Never would've guessed it was ginger.

id never seen the ginger look like that until i went into a new sushi place a few weeks ago. i'll agree that it freaked me out. i figured it was ginger as the sushi had a (v) under the name in the shop, but i made an omni friend test it out haha.

i hate wasabi too. now, i love spicy foods but that sinus feeling is just wrong. i want to try to learn to like it but not doing so well haha

I love me some ginger. I almost always ask for extra.

I like wasabi, too, but anything more than a tiny bit of it totally overpowers the taste of whatever you're eating it with.

Damn...now I want some sushi.

Mmmm, sushi...

Now I have a craving to go to this great Japanese place in Boston called Fugakyu (Ed. Note - tee hee hee... fugakyu...) and get their "Pine-Tato Maki." It's got fried sweet potato and grilled pineapple. HOLY HELL is that stuff good.

1-That's not real Wasabi-it's horseradish mixed with mustard & food colouring-do a web search if you don't believe me.

Real Wasabi is grown where I live and in a few other places in the Americas I find it somewhat underwhelming.

2-a larger question is why is someone who's an avowed vegetarian eating in a Sushi Bar?

Do you not know that almost everything is made with Dashi?

Real Japanese vegetarian is not at all common-I've had it and it's great but any place that's just pumping out rolls of various kinds is not nearly vegetarian no matter what they tell you.

Never heard of this. Apparently no one else in this thread has either?
