Hi all, I want to attempt to give up my Diet Coke addiction. The I really have an issue helping Nutra Sweet and the Coca Cola corp be profitable.

However, I am addicted! Really badly. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to wean off it or any good substitutions??

If only Blue Sky made a diet cola with Stevia or something... *SIGH*

Drink water instead. It's really hard to give up a first, but a bunch of us former vegwebbers gave up soda around New Year's. I still have soda on occasion (maybe once every two weeks and only 1/3 of a can or so), but not nearly in the amounts I used to consume.

Water and juice are good replacements. If you're like me and like the fizz of soda, try making a spritzer by mixing sparkling water with juice.

I thought it was impossible, but after a few weeks, I wasn't craving soda anymore and now if I have soda, I only want a little.

i did it cold turkey.. i switched to water and now i hate the taste of all sodas. i did get the headaches for the first week, but it was well worth it. i did not realize how many calories soda added to my diet. i dropped nearly 10 lbs soon after. i have far more energy as well..

good luck!

hey muppet i wonder how many of the people have continued to stay off the soda. i only remember loki and erin doing it with you..

I thought there were 6 or so of us. Loki did much better than me, if I remember correctly, and Erin had the biggest addiction to overcome, so she did very well, too.

I tried giving up soda by weening myself off the caffiene addiction first. Didn't work. It's so hard, but I am consuming less and less soda. (I was sooo glad I found caffiene free Dr. Pepper!) But alas, I have been addicted to caffiene since I was small. But I am glad I have, at least, come to a point where I don't drink it nearly as often as I did before.

But if you want something fizzy, I really reccomend Hansen's natural sodas. They are sooo delicious! I could really go for some right now. mmm....

Cola isn't made from cola beans at all. It's lemon juice, cinnamon and vanilla. Maybe you could make your own!

Oh wow. I gave up diet coke last summer, I was on about 6 tins a day. I was ill and suddenly by chance discovered all the evils of aspartame.

Half the internet is full of aspatame sufferers and I had no idea about it or what it can do to you.

IT WAS HELL. Worse than giving up smoking after thirty years of cigarettes.

And I've just started drinking it again even though I know it's HORRIBLE addictive nasty pointless stuff.

I drank elderflower cordial diluted with water. It's blissful stuff and probably not too calorific.

As with muppetcow and oneness...

I don't have fizzy/soda drinks, either!..

They're normally full of E numbers and crap.

You might consider trying certain *sparkling* types of "NATURAL flavored" mineral water or whatever but without false or artificial ingredients in it (although often you'll find many of the flavoured waters contain additives too). This for instance is why I buy drink labelled with the word NATURAL mineral water, but the additives

are of course extra, so its a case of having to assess those too,

(just in case your interested).

Have you ever tried Steap green tea soda? There's many flavors, lemon dew, key lime, rasberry, and root beer. I've tried them all except for the root beer, and they're delicious and also refreshing. There's not any junk in them either. Ingredients: sparkling filtered water, organic evaporated cane juice, citric acid, sodium citrate, natural lemon flavors, organic ceylon green tea, asorbic acid (Vitamin C). That was the lemon dew.

I am also a victim of Diet Pepsi / Diet Coke (and I still drink it at work).

At home I drink Diet Rite soda. It's made by Royal Crown (RC). It doesn't have caffeine or aspartame.

The sweetener is Splenda!! (yay)

Granted - it isn't as "good" as DPepsi/Coke - but it's cola and it's fizzy and sweet.

I cant give up soda's yet, but I dont drink as much coffee... and that is good for me... Yea, I was a Starbucks addict. I do like the hansens sodas. That would be a half way decent substitute for me. I started drinking diet pepsi, unlike the regular.... that is another huge step for me.

I also drink Diet Rite Soda and I refuse to drink aspatame sweetened soda anymore.

I tried writing Tofutti to tell them that I would not buy their no sugar added ice creams because they had aspartame in them and they wrote me back saying they had tried it with Splenda, but it did not work out for them, and they had better results with aspartame. I think Splenda is better for you than aspartame and I still can't believe that Splenda did not work for them. If you think the same as I do, please email them about it.

Hansen's has a line of diet sodas sweetened with Splenda (sucralose). No cola flavor tho... Black Cherry, Tangerine Lime, Peach, and Ginger Ale. All yummy...

I'm still hooked on Diet Pepsi and Diet Mt. Dew, tho... I actually enjoy the flavor of them with the aspartame (not nearly so sweet as the sugared versions) even tho it's pure evil from Monsanto... I have to agree with Spud about the difficulties of quitting caffeine. Much harder than nicotine was...

The only reason i used to drink soft drinks was because i was too lazy to get a cup out of the cupboard so id just drink it from the bottle... It was far easier than getting a cup then filling it with water...

So now i put bottles of water in the fridge, and i have orange juice...(no one else in my family likes orange juice so i can drink out of the bottle of that without being yelled at!! )

Danny

I haven't seen it in the stores but I haven't been looking. I used to love the root beer flavor.

Hmm apparently they do NOT make NY Seltzer anymore as I found it on some "food of the 80s" website, hahaha! Anyway, I would also stay away from the aspartame and try some flavored sparkling water instead if you have a tough time with plain water, good luck.

switch to other flavours that don't have caffeine in them. in the summer i can't get enough orange crush (made by pepsi but the generic versions aren't bad)

but i really love the creme soda by Blue Sky too. probably less sugar in that one.

and i second the flavoured sparkling water. look for flavoured "seltzer water", it's fizzy like pop and sweet but there's really nothing to them. i love the peach flavoured ones

clearly canadian is the $*%&!!!

Thanks for all the suggestions ( I type this while sipping on a can of the poison)! Part of my issue is I want it to be a calorie free item. I actually drink Crystal Gyeser's Sparkling mineral water with lime or lemon but it's not diet coke! If I drink regular soda, I stick to either "TheSwitch" soda which is 100% carbonated juice.

http://www.switchbev.com

or I purchase Blue Sky Organic Sodas.

http://www.blueskysoda.com/organic.htm

I personally don't want to drink high fructose corn syrup either, and I have been shocked to discover how many "natural" sodas have similar ingredients to the mainstream sodas.

Anyways thank you for all the suggestions!!!
