i've been trying to eat less sugar. i've stopped eating much candy, white bread... but i still am eating canned fruit with added sugar and pb with added sugar... i'm wondering if there's a certain number of grams of sugar i should be aiming for? i think i need a concrete goal in order to make this work.

I agree there. I try not to waste sugar calories on stupid things that are better without sugar anyway, like PB and fruit. I'd rather get my sugar from places like cookies, and soy delicious

I agree! Get your sugar from yummy stuff! Peanut butter and fruit are just as good (if not better!) without the added sugar.

And to answer your question about amounts of sugar:

Here are some guidelines for added sugar based on calories in the daily food choices:

1,600 calories - Limit sugar to 6 teaspoons per day or 22 grams per day

2,200 calories - Limit sugar to 12 teaspoons per day or 44 grams per day

2,800 calories - Limit sugar to 18 teaspoons per day or 66 grams per day

well the main reason i haven't been buying cookies, candy etc is because they cost money that i don't really need to spend on that sort of thing. and the cheapest peanut butter is the grocery store brand generic stuff.

i'm not going to be loosing any weight from eating less sugar... i hope. i'm doing it to improve my skin. maybe i should just forget it. but thanks amy for the numbers.

I eat tofutti cuties, maybe every other day if that.

I eat naturally occuring sugars every day though: soymilk, fruit all day, banana, sweet potato, dried fruit, raisins, tomatoes, soy sauce. Though it's not natural, some days I use modest amounts of maple syrup, just a little squirt in oatmeal or drizzled on vegan french toast.

I also use sweet and sour sauce and terayaki sauce occasionally.

If you want to maintain your weight, you will need to replace the calories you would have been getting from the sugar (4 Calories per gram of sugar) with something else.

You may already know this, but I thought I would point it out: labels can be really good at hiding sugar. Any of the following in an ingredients list are basically sugar: anything ending with "-ose" (glucose, maltose, fructose, etc), corn syrup, and honey (if you choose to eat honey).
