Storm Dogs Find New Homes By Deadline

More than a dozen dogs stranded in the May 9 tornadoes had been adopted Thursday, just hours before they were scheduled to be euthanized at the Bethany Animal Shelter.

Thirteen dogs were picked up after the storms, the destroyed hundreds of homes in the Oklahoma City metro area.

Because of overcrowding, the shelter said that it planned to put the storm dogs down unless the dogs found new homes by 11 a.m. today, but each of the dogs was adopted by the deadline.

Carrie Schimmels' family adopted a Blue Heeler mix.

"It just touched my heart," she said.

The supervisor said the shelter is often overcrowded due to stray dogs.

About five owners were reunited with their dogs in Bethany, officials said.

The Oklahoma City Animal Shelter said it still has about 29 dogs from the May 8 and May 9 storms.
