About the interviews

VeggieBoard interviews are a way for us to get to know each other better. It is a way to acknowledge just how wonderfully varied a community we are.

Every few days or so, a new interview will start and the old interview will be locked.

Every VeggieBoard member is allowed to ask the amount of questions specified by the interviewee in the answers to the default questions. If they discover that they chose too high or low a limit, they may change their choice.

Try to keep this thread about the person being interviewed. If you want to comment about things you discover you have in common or just elaborate on a response, pm them and make a new friend or start a new thread about it. This is intended to be a friendly thread, so please dont ask anything in a purposeful attempt to get a heated debate. Of course, nobody is required to answer a question that they do not want to.

The current person being interviewed will choose the next person. They need to first pm them and ask if they are interested, then pm me to let me know. It is preferred that you pick someone that you do not know very well as the purpose of this thread is to get to know new people.

Also, please keep in mind that any answers you post are viewable to complete strangers. There is some risk in that. Again, all questions are optional.

Lothar, on your VB profile.. .you list "languages" as one of your interests. What languages do you currently speak and are there any other languages that interest you?

(as an aside.. of-topic... does anyone else notice that alot of Europeans speak at least 1 other language besides their native one? I find this pretty impressive)

Seeing that I'm going into this thread knowing very little about you, and your profile says you're in Germany... I guess my question will just have to be about that!!

Seeing that you were born after WWII, does it seem really crazy to you that that war happened in your home country? (I'm assuming that you're from Germany.) If you could summarize your thoughts about the war in just a few words (say... 3-10 words (example: anger)), what would they be?

(Also... (sorry, if I'm asking too many questions, this tends to happen with me. ) Does it annoy you that just because you're from Germany, I want to talk about WWII? I can assume this happens somewhat frequently when you're online and you tell someone you're from Germany. I apologize if this is a pet peeve of yours.)

Age: 48

Birthday: 24th of September

Brief Intro: I´m a physician, who travels a lot. I studied Chinese and social anthropology. I´m interested in cultures. I like getting new perspectives.

Picture: picture yourself on a boat on a river / when my avatar is ready you´ll get my picture.

What led you to becoming a veggie?

Once I started for religious/ethical reasons, which lasted about 8 months. This time, health related reasons started it, but then I did a lot of reading and found out, that other reason had become more important.

Lothar, on your VB profile.. .you list "languages" as one of your interests. German, English, Chinese, less good Spanish and French, I learned Latin at school, understand Dutch, and have a smattering of Japanese. I think there´s a good reason learning English as a lingua franca.

What is your favorite non-computer related activity?

Reading.

What is your educational background? You seem to know a lot about medicine.[/]

After highschool (grammar school) I worked as a male nurse, then studied Chinese and social anthropology, partly in Taiwan, then went to medical school, worked as an internist and qualified later as a rheumatologist.

Why did you choose to become a rheumatologist?

Diagnosis isn´t so much dependant on technical support as in other specialties. It´s rather communication and manual examination. I like the interpersonal relation with people on a long term basis as you see patients for lots of years instead of once or twice.

What was the best and what was the worst place you've travelled to?

Best place: Vava´u (Tongan island), worst place: Marbella, I was disgusted of tourism and took to the mountains (Sierra Nevada), which liked very much.

Seeing that you were born after WWII, does it seem really crazy to you that that war happened in your home country? Sadness. It´s to heavy a topic to do it in a few words. My sister-in-law recently published a book on advertisements of larger firm during the 3rd Reich, in which they didn´t only advertise for their goods but at the same time showed support for fascism.

We have such interesting peeps!!

Lothar - You mention the idea of English as "a good idea" in terms of a lingua franca... you're living in Germany, which (I believe) adopted the Euro last year, and is an important part of the EU... You also clearly have been exposed to a range of worldviews in your travels. With the EU expanding towards the near/middle east (turkey), what do you think the implications are of (A) English becoming the "official language of the world" and (B) the 1984-esque idea of one world currency?

What is your general opinion of Americans? Has this changed at all since joining VB?

Still good, because I have loots of American friends. Politics have deteriorated with the Bush administration. I was surprised that our Chancellor didn´t give in going to war with Iraq. Though Saddam has gone, it has still been a war on false pretexts. Lots of people died by the way. Remember the kid, who lost both his arms? But that´s poltics and has nothing to do with personal relations. I´ll be in Florida (Orlando) to attend to a congress during October. And I´m happy to being able to do so.

My general opinion hasn´t changed, but some of my values have already changed.

The Euro BTW is handy, I`ve been to Spain in May and to Portugal in June, and I didn´t have to change money.

In the near/middle east you will always have Arabic as a lingua franca, though in terms of international commerce it sure will change to English. English has the most native and second language speakers of all languages and this is an advantage. It might change somewhen, e.g. Chinese.

I think one world currency would be a tempting idea, no exchange rates etc. For global players I think it doesn´t matter if they buy and sell in different currencies.
