Spinning is a class using a special kind of bike. These bikes have a knob to change resistance on them and the petals have torque- they are somewhat self propelling once you get them going, although you still have to work hard and fast. Generally there is an instructor who leads the class with various standing, sitting, and changing the resistance, although you can spin on your own, too. If you're interested in spinning class, call up your local health club. The one where I work allows 5$ spinning class fees and sells spin cards, too.

ohh! spinning rocks! i'm no expert by any means, and have only gotten into it the past few months, but i love love love it. i prefer to do it solo, cause i dont like class atmoshperes when working out. and plus, i push myself harder when i'm alone. i've recently really put up the resisitance and will go for 2 minutes on average and then for a few at a pretty high (hard!) settting.

it's a really good work out...ya feel the burn afterwards if you push yourself. good stuff.

here's a pic of one:

http://www.lifestylesport.com/revolution_club_cycle.htm

you push yourself more alone? i can be a slacker sometimes....we have this wonderful spin teacher who pushes us all like mad, until we want to cry ....I'm looking forward to Sunday's class!

Corri- the main difference is the self propelling action of the petals. you still have to work to push them, but you go very fast.(spinning...whoosh!) Its great fun and I would suspect it burns a lot of calories...!

yeah, odd huh? you'd think i'd be more into it in a class setting. but nah! see i like the higher settings too, because i can feel it more..the fast is fun for but it doenst do much for me. i just really use it as a road bike and work on my climbing mostly....i've almost passed out a few times...i should probably watch it...it's the only inside exercise thing that does that to me - amazing workout but it's fun stuff (i think, heh)..

Okay everybody.........I am a Spinning Instructor and Master Trainer (I certify people to teach indoor cycling). The reason they call is "Spinning" is because the wheel "spins". What happens is, the pedals are attached to the fly wheel - so there is no coasting in class - unless you completely pull your feet out! Also - there is about a 600 calorie burn per hour class..........so it's a real workout. Except......no one touches the resistance knob but you - so......if you get your butt kicked - no one does it but YOU!

Also - it's a non-impact workout so your body doesn't get slammed into the floor and the workout is done in the dark - so you never have to compare yourself to anyone else! This is great because it's for all levels of athletes! I've taken classes where the 61 year olds are sitting next to the 21 year olds! It's GREAT! Plus - the class is set to music, so you can get really into your workout if music motivates you!

As for "crotch burn" ....you will just 1) learn how to put the weight into your legs to keep you from sitting heavy in that area and 2) your legs become a lot stronger so you don't sit heavy and 3) you just get used to it!

I hope this helped. I love teaching this class, as I am an old dinasaur teacher (been teaching 23 years) and this is the one class that I just love to death! It's great! Everyone should try it at least once. Also - if you didn't like the class - try another. Everyone's taste in music is different as all is the teachers personality.

See ya in Spinning Class!

Funkified.........there are NO mirrors in the Spinning room. The reason they started this was because they didn't want people competing against each other or worrying about "how they looked", etc. In the classes I teach - people have their eyes closed at times! It's great! You can actually feel the road, hills, etc. It's just a wonderful all around workout!

Interesting - they just started spin classes at my gym and people were rioting to get into them. I think there are waiting lists to get onto the actual waiting list to try and get into a class I would love to take a class, but the music is so loud that I can usually hear it in the normal gym with my headphones on so I can only imagine what it is like in the class.
