Orapunzel just posted her quest for gluten-free T-day recipes, and she got me to thinking: Whatever happened to tapioca?

I just bought a tiny box of "small pearl" tapioca from an old-fashioned New York City grocery store (that is, a downmarket store with narrow, sticky-floor aisles, toy-sized shopping carts, a visible and not-recently-scooped litterbox for the store's resident cat, etc.). I was unable to find any tapioca, anywhere else, including "Whole Paycheck" (the not-so-affectionate NYC name for Whole Foods).

I have golden memories of "Large Pearl" tapioca, which my mother used to cook up as pudding back in the early 1960's. It was more or less the same size as the "Black Bubbles" tapioca balls found in Asian tea drinks today, only it was colorless and had no licorice flavor. Made into a pudding, it was probably my all-time favorite dessert as a small child.

So, where do you buy fresh(er) tapioca, small or large? And, once you find it, what can you do with it besides fancy Asian drinks and dessert puddings? I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

You know, you're right. I haven't seen a reference to Tapioca Pudding for years! It was a staple in my high school's cafeteria lunches growing up (though I never tried it). Their version looked like slop, and since mom always served up an oatmeal slop that I didn't much care for, I never worked up the desire to try it. These days, I wouldn't mind trying a vegan version, just to see.

Innways... since then, I haven't seen it anywhere.

I will have to look at the bulk section of my HFS to see if they carry it. If anyone would have it, they would. Their bulk section is HUGE.

For Tapioca, I'd check the asian / oriental shops
