Discussion Starter #1
Does anyone know if sour dough starter or any dough starter is vegan? I was at the Farmer's market a couple weeks ago and i wanted to buy thier brand of bread. The ingrediants started out with "Sour dough starter" and i know what it does and ect. ,but i don't know if the ingrediants are vegan or not?

I really love thier breads and baked goods as they make alot of them with no milk or eggs(their carrot bread and banana nut bread is to DIE for).

Thanks!

Sourdough starter is almost always vegan, unless they're putting something strange into it. You could certainly ask them to double check, but starter is pretty safe.

Sourdough starter is usually flour, yeast and water. But I'd ask to make sure. If you make your own bread, you could make your own sourdough starter too, there's lots of recipes on the web.

I have a cowboy chuckwagon sour dough starter article that is raw potatoes soaked in water until the water sours. Mix with flour and a little sugar to keep the bacteria bubbling. Mix up your bread, Keep back a little starter for tomorrow's bread. That's pretty vegan. Ah history books, aren't they delightful?
