I was woking in our garden the other day and received a really large number of big, itchy bug bites, as well as poison ivy and/or sumac rashes. Does anyone know anything that will soothe the itchiness and maybe redness and look of these naturally? I don't know what Cala-whatever lotion has in it but I'm betting it's not natural and/or vegan, but correct me if I'm wrong...

Thanks!

Straight ammonia dabbed on with a cotton ball (or whatever) will stop the itch from mosquito bites. The juice from comfrey also helps (break off a fresh stem, dab the juice that oozes from the break on the welt left by the insect.

I have not tried this one personally but chickweed is said to stop the itch of poison contact rashes. A poultice of the fresh plant is supposed to be best but infused oil or cream is also said to work well. Soaking the limb in a tub of infused water or the body in a bath of the same is said to help.

Aloe is supposed to be good. I'm not sure what it does for poison ivy, but it works wonders on other things.

Calamine lotion consists of Calamine, Zinc Oxide, Bentonite, Calcium Hydroxide, Glycerin, Purified Water. It looks as though calamine is vegan (this product http://www.shopconsciously.com/Item/102168/ contains it and is vegan) and according to http://www.ecowine.com/vegan.html, bentonite is vegan too.

So, unless there's something else I don't know about (which is entirely possible), slather some on!

(Toothpaste often works too)

Try tea tree oil. THat stuff works miracles. I use a tea tree oil blemish stick on zits, bites, irritations, etc. Wow! It has always worked without fail. Just buying pure tea tree oil works too. You can find it at fred meyer or trader joes quite easily.
